Issue is that she likes to stay in 1st gear unless i throw into neutral and give it some throttle, then shift back into gear it will likely upshift then.

i pulled the governor, it appears to be fine, and adjusted the tv cable to where about 1/2" of sleeve is showing past the bracket. seemed to help a bit, but it will still stick on occasion.

Trans is from somewhere around '89 (numbers are really worn down near the pan so hard to say). Lockup is wired to a switch in the dash.

So, do I need to pull the valve body next in my troubleshooting efforts? What say the CK5 experts?? No, no manual swap lol.

Since it still has all of the gears, but doesn't want to shift sometimes, I suspect a sticking valve. The one that likes to stick the most is the TV since the last section of it is full floating with no return spring (far right):

The common first step is to "snap" the cable several times from the throttle side to see if that frees it. The next step is to drop the pan and inspect the TV linkage and make sure it's all set up right:

This also lets you check out the fluid and look for shavings. The sticking could be due to debris in the fluid and that represents a bigger problem. Now you really could use a pressure gauge at this point to see if line pressure is really changing with TV position. The next step, though, is to drop the valve body, pull that valve and clean it out by hand:

If you're very careful you can drop the valve body without losing any check balls. Best case is that the separator plate stays up.

Somebody made a valve less prone to stick:

But the most common fix is to put a small spring in front of the whole valve assembly.

Thanks for that info Blue...
Any idea on what sort of spring I'd be looking for, or maybe the revised valve that's less prone to sticking?

Upgrading the valve is something to do when you already have it apart. First you need to drop the pan and have a look. If something is wearing that is the main problem. When was the fluid last changed? How many miles?

Changed when I took ownership, about 15 mos ago. Put about 1000 miles on it. Has a cooler and a filter installed.

When I test drove it, it did the same thing, and the PO said his work around was to throw into neutral, give it some gas, then back into D and it would shift...which actually worked most of the time. For a period, after a good tv cable replacement and adjusted, it worked fine...but starting to stick more often :(

How about figuring out what's wrong first?

If its toast, I can rebuild it on a weekend I dont have my kids for pretty cheap. Hell, probably beer money as Im beyond broke and since Im laid off anyways I have nothing to do except get fat.

Pans been pulled, nothing looks amiss....not any shiny pieces and fluid looks ok.

My tv doesn't look like the one in the pic...I can count 4 rings but it all moves freely without hanging up, springs seem ok. Is that pic with the tv valve all the way in?

I'm sorry to hear that..I might take ya up on the offer if we can't get this figured out.

So pan was off, cleaned all connections, pulled body and gave a good bath, spring were tight, nothing seemed to bind up, moved thru the range ok with no binding or hanging up.
Put it all back together, new filter and fluid. First try shifted thru all gears ok. Stopped and tried again. Stuck in first...shifted to N then back to D, then shifted from first and on from there.

This thing is starting to irritate me

Its probably a sticking piston (cant remember the name) or a valve getting hung up from some stuff stuck in it.

And meh, being laid off is part of the construction trade. Sucks, but it happens. Had a good year so cant complain.

Well you seem like your in good spirits about it and keeping positive!

I'm willing to bet at this point after taking it all apart, you guys are right about the sticking valve. Everything else seems ok, no pieces of metal or bands in the pan.
No clue, as I used lots of cleaner and upon reassembly everything moved ok. Guess that's just part of it though :( I'm sure she's a bit happier now with more fresh fluid and a new filter on the bright side lol.

So, would the next step be to remove the VB again, and look at a replacement valve? Or is there more troubleshooting to be had?

Welp, after 6 months of laying around, you get used to it. But tis the season for work here soon.

It may clean itself out with the new fluid and such after you drive it a bit.

Very true, I'm ready for spring to finally get here...they're saying snow this weekend :(

Just an update...

Decided to pull the pan again, this time there appears to be small amounts of grease in the bottom of the pan. Pulled the tv valve plunger and spring, tried pulling the valve itself with a magnet but it wouldn't come out. Seemed to slide ok though.

I thought I read that valve was removable...
So, where to go from here? Hook up a pressure gauge and see?

FWIW, the case code is 0KRM124AA, so I think it's a '90 case?

The grease must be shavings... what else could it be?

The whole valve should slide right out. IIRC you can get a little pick or tiny screwdriver in to move it, but I can't remember if you have to do that from the top of the valve body. If you can get the valve cleaned and it shifts fine for a while, at least you know what's going on.

Thanks Blue, kinda thinking the same...but it doesn't shimmer or seem metallic, so maybe clutches are wearing...
I think we're on a path here to fix it (for now lol). If that grease substance is getting anywhere near the tv valve, that's likely what's causing it to stick, right?
My plan is to run it for a while, pull the pan again and see if that grease is back. If not, I think a full fluid flush is on order.
I do have an external spin on trans filter, so I may pull and cut it to see what lies within...get a better idea of what's moving thru the lines.

Pulled the valve body, the TV valve itself is held by a pin only accessible from the top, guess I missed it last time.

So pulled it, gave it a good cleaning with some 2000 grit. Seems to slide so much better...like butter :)

BUT, I lost track of where those check balls go, and apparently the PO installed a transgo shift kit...I only came up with 2 balls in the VB, the separator plate is still in the case, for now. Debating pulling that too and giving a once over
