I'm doing axle swap under my 88 K5. Going from a Corp. 6 lug to a Corp. 8 lug up front. The 6 lug had Warn hubs on it and I wanted to just use those on the 8 lug. It has the conversion lock rings (for the auto hubs to the manual hubs) so I figured I could get away with this.

The problem I found was that the Warn the hub wont go all the way in. Seems it to go about another half an inch or so. I did some web search and didn't really find any so I figured I would ask the god of the K5s.

Hopefully that made some sense. Sorry if it didn't I'm still kinda new to this.
Thanks for any help y'all can give.

This is the 6 lug axle its got 3 notches. 2 in the front and one at the far end.

This the 8 lug axle it only has 2 notches on it. 1 on the far end and this one.

This is the Warn hub on the 8 lug axle. I can't get the snap ring.
Need any more pictures???

Ok so the guys at WFO said that I should be fine with the far snap ring and the large c ring...:dunno: I'll try that in that the morning. Has anyone had this problem before???

Never seen notches like that, normally it's just the one groove at the end. Either way, the axles are interchangeable. Try prying on the shaft from the back to push it out as far as possible, a normal step most of the time.

Ok I'll try that in morning to. Thanks for the advice!

Soooo I think this axle is one of a kind 10b that can't have Warn hubs on them!!! :angry1:

That is only the 2nd axle i've seen like that that wont accept the small outer snap-ring. You could always swap the axles though. I would not suggest running without the snap-rings in place as the axles can and will move in/out enough to bind up an axle joint and snap the joint and or axle.

That was one of my thoughts but I don't have the knowledge to do that kind of swap tho...

If you are able to remove the hub/rotor assembly there isn't much more to it. You DO NOT need to open the diff cover, the axles just slide out after you remove the hub/rotor assembly and the brake caliper mount.

Ok sounds some what easy just time consuming. Thanks for the help! I'll give that a go and see if that fixes the problem. :waytogo:

Should only take about an extra 5 minutes per side to do this. Once you have the wheel hub removed I believe there are 6 bolts/nuts to take off so the spindle and caliper mounts/backing plates can be removed, then just slide the axleshaft out and slide the other one back in.

If the spindle have not been removed in a long time it can be a little tough to get loose. Just make sure to clean up the surfaces and put a little anti-seize on them when reinstalling.

only PITA about swapping shafts is the wheel bearings, if you are okay with those, it's easy

Yea so I totally feel like a gooner now. I was ganna take the shafts out of this 10b I had laying around but it's a 6 lug and I totally spaced that when I was thinking about this whole thing. Ha So my new plan is to just get chromo shafts and a put a locker in there all at the same time. So I guess I'll just be hopping that they don't fail on me tell then. Thanks for the help tho everyone! :waytogo:

The shafts are the same, 6 or 8 lug has nothing to do with the axle shafts themselves.

to reiterate what you and I have already said :waytogo:

but if the OP goes D60, I'll watch and help all the same :woot:
