ok ive been doing alot of researching but im only getting more confused with rustoleum do i need to sand the old paint job off? some say no some say yes. also i need some clarity on the wet sanding process. i dont know anything bout wet sanding or why to do it or when to do it also im rolling on some rustoleum paint and if anyone has any other paint brand suggestions let me know. sorry for the stupid questions:doah:

OK, so you are set on rolling on Rustoleum. You are aware by now of the pros and cons of doing so. And should be aware that the finished product will not be perfect.

Check out my thread, start on page 3

You don't need to sand the old paint completely off.

You will need to sand/scuff the surface for the Rusto to stick to. I used a DA sander on the big panels and red Scotchbrite scuff pads on the corners, rounded edges, and hard to reach stuff. I did zero wet sanding. But my methods and outcome were quick and dirty. If you want more of a finish like that old Challenger in one of the threads pointed to you before then it will take more work, more time, more materials, etc.

If you want quick, cheap, and dirty then follow what I did in my thread.

If you want show car quality results then follow the tips and advice in the other threads linked to you before, in your other thread about paint advice.

I believe so. I didn't read up on the wet sanding of the Rusto. More involved than I wanted to get for a trail truck. My truck got first coat, cure time, then second coat, done.

This is how my Rustoleum roll-on job turned out....
*I stripped my original paint, w/ "Aircraft remover".

I'm pleased with the look, but will NEVER do it again....
Flat black shows EVERYTHING.
Run yer finger along it,and you get a nice white streak... who the hell knows why? :dunno:

In fact, look under the tail light lens....
That's hard water residue, after a wash. :doah:

im not a paying member i cant see your pics could you copy and paste?

Watch the video(s) I put up in another thread in the garage. My truck is in there. You don't need to be a member to watch those.

Hang on a minute, let me try posting one from my phone....

496truck, I saw where you said the paint was soft. How so? Scratch easy?

I'm asking because I'm thinking of HLVPing mine. I may not if it's a problem. I plan on doping some wheeling, so high dollar paints are out, but I don't want it to fall off when I scratch it hitting the garage as I drive in.

Also, 496...what color is that from?

Here, I'll link it from another site...

And Uther... that color is Rustoleum, smoke gray.

And the softness, I have nicked it a couple times having bounced various items off the side of the truck, while it was only a couple days old. I think it has cured a bit better since then. On Sunday I rubbed a tree and it didn't appear to be any more than a typical scratch. So, soft paint yes. But it's not flying off the truck, even in the damaged spot.

That's it. It is orange peely though. I should have painted it orange that way the texture would have been accurate. :D

Seriously though, I rolled the semi gloss on the roof with a small foam roller and the texture is better. But as I have said before, I didn't want to put too much time or money into painting this thing as it sees regular trail duty.

So far I like the tires a lot. Smooth as glass and quiet on the highway and have yet to let me down in traction on the trail.

yea orange peel doesnt really bother me but ive heard great things about those tires have you had them in any mud yet?

A little. I try to avoid mud when I can. I hate mud and the clean up that goes with it. But there are some trails we run, one in particular, that can get pretty swampy. I went through the swampy part without any trouble. This was last summer.

yea one of my wheelin buddies has them on his 4 runner and loves them i might save up for a month or 2 and get me set of them in 35s are they hard tread or soft i know soft wears faster but much more traction

Standard DOT make. Not the soft/sticky version which I think is limited to the Krawler T/A. :dunno: I don't think they make sticky KM2s, but I could be wrong.
