Need to seal up rear diff cover....

I tried the Perma-tex stuff and well, its leaking now..so thinking of going with an actual gasket of some sort unless ya'll got better ideas? ?

I have this cover if it matters...........

It leaked with PermaTex? Wow. That stuff is amazing. I won't use it again, when I used it, I didn't even need bolts. It's crazy. Took an hr to get the cover off.

on this cover were is it leaking ?

on my 12 bolt rear in the 2wd build I have the same cover and its full of oil and not leaking . I used the gasket with super thin rightstuff gasket maker for tack coat .

also I threaded the pre adjuster bolts as far as possible and coated them in pipe thread sealer . then installed and set . when I set the lock nuts I used more pipe thread sealer .

haven't drivin the truck yet . but as said diff full and no leaks.

also the bolts in the cover kit were correct length BUT the 1973 diff I used must of not been tapped to the full depth . I found the cover tiny bit loose on test fit . I had to finish tap the holes with a bottom out tap. ( broke 1 in diff also little fun ) this solved the problem perfect for the test fit problem .

side note the drain hole was 3/4 closed off by the diff center section face . so I took a die grinder and modified the cover with a big clearance notch to help the oil drain much better for when I do ever need to drain . had to notch the gasket also in this area.
 
Its leaking from the bottom area...ive tightened the bolts that came with the cover so im assuming they are correct length. I plan to pull it all and just use some gasket and put pipe threads on the drain bolt and pre-load bolts.

When I put the cover, I need to makes sure its flat and flush, its a pretty thick cover but doesnt mean its machined perfectly flat,
 
It appears that cover's bolt holes are countersunk,do the bolts use o-rings under the heads?--or do you use allen head bolts to bolt it on?.....just curious..

I always use a gasket if possible,coated with some RTV or non hardening Permatex "bear tar" stuff...
 
What permatex product did you use?

Never had an issue once I switched over to the Right Stuff, no gasket. I also put a dab around the bolts close to the head so they seal to the cover.

It came with allen head bolts with some metal type washer, no rubber o ring. I used the perma tex like in the photo. something still leaking. Can see it visibly leaking from the bottom.

Well 10b front and 14bsf rear in my case. I think they do make one for ten bolt rears.

Those are reusable correct?

(I'm talking about the gasket, not the baby axles :haha:)

they make them for the D30, but not a 10b?? seems like as often as you would need to get it a 10b, it would be a big seller...:pimp:

They make them for the rear 10b I think. But the fronts have a different shape.
 
This stuff is the bomb! NEVER had a leak just using it with NO gasket

I found my loose cover with test fit before seal up and bolts tight . at first I was thinking preload bolts hitting already but nope just a hair loose . all I had to do was finish the holes with a bottom out tap .

using sealer always make the bead you put down go above / to the center diff so it has sealer around the hole for the bolts and also gear oil side.

I have seen so many put sealer on wrong and have leaks .
