Howdy gang,

after completely striking out in the search for first gen bumpers I ended up having a local fab/4x4 shop build a set (not cheap). My goal was to complement the natural bodylines as much as possible while adding a bit of functionality to the K5. Both front and rear are powder coated with a semi-gloss black.

Front- A warn 9500 fits snuggly down in the bumper, you'ld have to remove it to get the winch out. I made sure the center hoop was low enough as to not cover the grill. The eyelets go all the way through, back to the frame.

Rear- The rear was a pain in the arse. In order to keep the swing out carrier as short as possible and not impede the function of the tailgate we had to recess the top of the bumper to make room for the bottom arm. We used a 3500# pivot to support the weight of 2 jerry cans and the planned 36" PJ spare. (33" TRXUS are mounted right now) It ended up EXTREMELY stout, I stood on the end with 10 gallons of gas and a 36/14.50 PJ and the sucker didnt even budge and I'm 6'6 300lbs. The reciever is hidden by the license plate which slides out when necessary. The swing out is fully supported by poly pads and does not make a sound when offroad.

I hope these pics help somebody else out in thier search for bumper ideas.

Thanks guys, it's nice to make progress on a project once in a while.

Those are some very nice bumpers. So give us an idea of what "not cheap" means. :D

Quality doesn't come cheap and cheap doesn't come in a quality product. :wink1:

I like the idea of the rear bumper being recessed to clear things.

what he said, very cool idea. alot of people will be robbing or should I say borrowing this idea. I know I might.

$1900 out the door.... it was worth it to me to get exactly what I wanted. The same shop will be doing the cage in December if I can figure out what I want...

Most excellent work.

You found a good fab shop that cares!

Very clean 1st gen to take out wheeling, nice ride.

nice, I like the spare tire and gas carrier setup. Have a few more detailed pics of that?

Sweet!!! Those look great and functional too! I'll be looking for something similar for my 70.

Yea, those look like the nicest first gen custom bumpers I've ever seen.

I am still looking for a better spare tire location than the stock one I've got. It takes up too much bed space. I was thinking your bumper might be a good option until I saw the price. Ouch! But yea, that kind of customization is not cheap.

Carrier Pics

Mnorby, I snapped a few more pics of the carrier this morning. Let me know if you need any other pics.

thanks, Nate

never seen anyone mount that cans like that before, definately thinking outside the box. Thanks for the pics :waytogo:

How does swing out latch to main bumper?

$1900 was alot to spend on bumpers but that total included 2 jerry cans, the highlift, and $200 worth of powder coating. Some of the online fab shops I checked out would have been in the $1200-1300 range for both w/o powder coating/accessories and wouldn't have been close in terms of fit and form. Plus I prefer to spend $ locally.

The 3500# pivot was sunk down into the bumper itself to allow for the carrier recess. We played around with a few different designs, the main issues being clearance for the tailgate, overall height, departure angle, and the desire to avoid having a pivot ontop of the bumper, directly in front of the tail light.
