New Chevy 350 crate motor, Oil Leak I don't have 300 miles on it and I have an oil leak looks like its leaking out by the starter, at high speed, it leaks bad, make a nice smoke screen, when it hits the headers.

No oil on top, by the valve covers.

It’s coming out the back.

I know what I think it is, I hope I'm wrong,

Any ideas?

Bad distributor gasket? Not sealing at the rear of intake manifold? Leak at oil pressure sender? Dipstick tube not inserted/sealed? A rear main leak will probably show a lot of oil in the inspection cover.

On trick is to put on a layer of talcum powder and try to trace where it's coming from.

checked the Distributor, dry, intake,, dry up high,, sending unit, new clean and dry. Dip stick,,, its on the drivers side the oil is on the passenger side,,, does it have a dipstick hole????????????
by the starter??
I'm thinking it might be the main seal,,, I am hoping its not,, as I'd have to pull the transmission too,, grrrr

check the passenger side if a crate motor it will have openings on both sides. Least my 350 crate motor had one on each side.

My crate engine had a provision for dipstick on either side. GM sent a steel plug for the hole i was not using. Might be something to look for.

I'll check that when I get home,,,, I didn't know,,, it had holes on both sides,,, thinking,,, does that hole have threads? if so what size so I can bolt it up

Could be oil pan. where the rear main seal housing meets the corner of the pan. This area is known for leaking if you do not put an extra dab of silicone in it.

Well, Do I feel silly,,,,,, but happy too,, I had no idea the block had two oil dip stick hole's. it was hiding under the header over the starter,, for now my truck had TWO Dip sticks,, I'll put a plug in the drives side hole seeing I can get to that one, pretty easy!

Thank you folks for your input,,

So much better that doing a rear main seal,,, oooooooooooooooooooo

Jim !
