new crate motor...UPDATE PG. 3...a little oil to valves/heads now!!!!

Well...Let me tell you a little story about my chevy crate motor,,,

The engine in my blazer is 454 HO crate motor,,I picked up the engine,,, mounted it onto my engine stand and bolted on all of the accessories.

I filled the pan with oil,,installed a preluber and primed up the engine.

I didn,t like the low pressure I was reading on my gauge, so I called the dealer and asked them to speak with an engineer,,the dealer would not put me in touch with anyone, and said don't worry about it,, install it and fire it up. So against my better judgement,,,in it went.

When I cranked the engine the first time the O/P went to 70 and dropped to 0 in about ten seconds. I shut it down,,went over everything again and restarted it,,,same thing happened.

I drained the oil,,and started to drop the pan,,,I was removing the windage tray bolts when I dropped my wrench inside the pan,,,I reached into the pan to get the wrench and came up with a handfull of plastic wrap and cardboard
from under the pickup screen.

I brought the pan full of trash into the dealership and got the parts manager to contact GM while I waited,,GM's answer was to clean out the pan,,button it back up and extend my warranty twice what the factory offered originally.

Moral of the story is: I should have trusted my instincts when the engine was on the stand and found out what the problem was before I installed the engine...

At this point, If I where him, I'd just pour 1/2 a qrt over each bank of rockers, close up, refire and run at normal varied break-in rpms...
x2 get em wet to prevent damage. Run it and break it in.

Like ryoken, ive never seen a small block that takes less than 5 qts...

You mean GM does screw up from time to time?
sadly yes. a friend of mine bought a crate engine from gm dealer and 2 of the rocker arm was over tightened and it was missing. sloved the problem but he never contacted gm dealer.. he didnt want to deal with the hassle.

If you purchased the correct replacement engine for your truck, you have 3 year 100,000 mile parts and labor warranty. If the dealer says otherwise they are incorrect. What year is your truck and what part number engine did you get ?

I agree with Ryoken, Fram oil filters suck like a Hoover. I highly recomend taking it off and never using a fram filter again.

There was a VERY informative thread or 2 about oil filters, I'll see if I can dig it up for ya...

awesome...update guys....
i did what was suggested, poured 1/2 quart on either set of rockers and fired her up, reved her to the suggested 2300-2700RPMs and fluctuated for 15minutes or so. now im getting some oil on the valves, but not really alot...it should be slinging/splashing everywhere right????

i left the oil fill cap off and i could see some oil, but like i said...not alot.

what if the grease i used to install the fuel filter pushrod, and the assembly lube are clogging the oil pump/filter/passages and that's keeping it for pumping up there good.

OH YEAH...and both rear header tubes are glowing red now after the 15 or 20 minutes that i ran her....that's normal ain't it???

If they didnt install it they might not cover labor... He should have gotten info with the motor about the warranty. Bets bet would be to read through all of it either way...

actually...i got NOTHING but core info with the motor. when i asked the guy when i picked it up i was told that it doesnt come with anything....he was the manager so i figured he knew.
