Picked me up an 86 K5 today for $500. It has a blown 350 with a 700r4 and NP208. I am going to swap my 350 and axles and all other cool stuff on my 85 over to it.
I have decided to go back to the sheet metal gang and have doors and a top so the wife and kids can tag along on my adventures.
What do you guys think?

This Bad boy is rust free and pretty darned clean for an 86. I need to acquire a back seat and a window handle for the rear glass.

After that I will swap my D44 (ARB'd, X over, Chromod), 14ff Detroited, Roll bar, 35" MTR's, 2" Lift, Yellow Top, Winch, etc.......you get the picture.

Basically all the things I spent money on that I would never get back if I sold my 85. I will then take my 85 to the scrapper and yank the tires (4 sale :wink1: ) and get some dough for scrappin the 85 :D

Pic's of my 85:

I like the idea of making a nice family rig .

But whats stopping ya from having a wheeling rig too with the 85 :D

Move out here , keep both trucks , and wheel with us ;)

Well if I kept both then that would make 4 vehciles and 3 out of the 4 would be 4WD (Lots of insurance$$$$)

We want to sell my wifes Bonneville and just have the 05' Dodge CTD and my K5.

I live on an AF base and only have to drive like 2 miles to work and back :D

The amount of dough we would save is in the neigborhood of $200 a month with only 2 vehicles.

I am still going to wheel like I did before, just trails that are more full sized friendly.

Plus I miss being able to drive my K5 daily with all the goodies it has on it :D

Pauly, your rig is a DD and a rock crawler, I just want to be like you :D

No more of "Look at that piece of crap in that guys driveway" talk from the neighbors :haha:

I appreciate the offer but right now I could get some from the local JY for cheaper than Diesel to CA :doah:

The seats that are in it now are vynil and cracked. I am going to swap my fronts from the 85 to the 86. They are cloth and in pretty darned good shape.

I was maybe thinking of getting an aftermarket rear bench for the rug rats to keep them little turds in place.

But they will be in car seats for the next few years so a stock bencher will probably do till then.........

I think you should start looking for a rust free 'yota body for me :p:

Ha, it is pretty plain looking. I would like to get a Dual color paint scheme like they came with from the factory.

I am just ecstatic about having a rust/dent free truck :D

I got to mess with it a little today by ripping out the dry rotted dash mat......

I also got underneath and just looked at everything real well. Seems the front seat mounts have cracked in the body, so some repair work is in order. They PO's must have been some FAT A$$E$ :haha:

I am thinking of maybe just putting in a front cage and doing some seat mounts that way

Ha, Britney and I thought getting rid of her car and me driving the K5 again would save us money :D

Hey are you sure its an 86. I may be wrong but its only got the 1 headlight up front. My 86 has the dual headlights like ur 85 does.

I could be wrong here but I just thought i'd throw that out there.

I noticed that too  . They must have changed the front clip on it at some point. The door jam, glove box, and VIN all match the title and claim it to be an 86. The guy I bought it from had purchased it this summer from the original owner and it just sat in his garage till I bought it.

He knew very little about it.

I think the 4 headlight vs 2 headlight thing was something to do with the options package. Like all the military trucks came with only 2 headlights. I think that was the case with the base trim package.

There are even 89-91 K5s with only 2 square headlights, I think that was the Scottsdale trim package.

That would make sense, this is a bare model K5. No trim on the body, cheap all white paint, vynil seat(yuck), manual windows, etc.

I do however like the manual windows since the power ones in my 86 were slow and annoying.....

That was a trim package thing. My buddy has an 89 (ex power company K5, no options) and it has the 2 headlight front end.

Sorry yall. Learn something new every day.

I've been here heading on 6 years and still learn stuff every day. Lots of little obscurities with these trucks...mostly because the production run spanned so many years.
