New exhaust thoughts and possible smog delete

As an fyi, 87-91 k5’s came stock with single 3” exhaust. If running headers, you could just source the walker replacement pipes after the stock cat location and do your y-pipe routed to connect there.

Ive got dual 2.5’s with h-pipe and i believe some sort of flowmasters, tips routed ~60* behind the rear tires. Looks and sounds good, possibly a little too loud (getting old!) with the soft top rolled up.

I have to have symmetry, so dual is the only option for me
 
I ran 2.25 duals for years, but when i needed a traction bar i went to a single. I haven't missed duals since yet went in the scrap bin. Packaging is so much easier with a y pipe and single dump.
 
3" Stainless Steel Mandrel Bent pipes & a SS muffler... the stainless steel will hold the heat ,+ help pull / flow more efficient.

Not a fan of Flow Masters.... But a complete 3" SS system+ SS, Flow master would be very efficient.

Me, I had 2.5" dual flow masters on my.square body dually..... Big mistake... major pia for routing.
 
So is it worth doing it yourself, from a kit? I have a Lincoln wire feed and am a decent enough welder. May not be the prettiest, but they don't break either and they might be a little on the fat side.
 
My truck came w/ shorty headers, AIR equipped as I have to pass emissions here. They cook plugs but at least they don't leak.. lol

Also have dual 2.5's and yeah when you work on things it does add extra work.

I haven't used an exhaust shop for years. I do it myself rather than pay someone to do it quick and with little concern for the end result. It can cost more than a shop, but I usually like how it works out. And I have only been buying mandrel bends anymore, which the local guys don't use unless you pay big money.
 
I cheated..... Start with a Magna flow SS exhaust kit.... Use it for the parts you need.... Weld away

I got a "kit" from a company that did bending, it was basically a variety of bends (I think 30*, 45*, 90* and 180*) so that all I had to do was get some straight pipe.

Y-pipe was the hardest to make, both to clear the front driveshaft (and it still wasn't enough, as evidenced by the dents/gouges in the pipe that strangely resemble the front shafts weld) and the merge, but its nice to make it go wherever you want.

If you do plan on needing to get it out of the way, its also a lot easier to weld up if you have it come apart (such as by using V-band clamps) in a couple of places. Personally I think y-pipe, then again at the muffler rearward. Even with a single pipe it still can get in the way if you need to work on something on that side, and its easier to remove a section than it is to remove the hangers and drop the whole thing.
