I got all the parts in today except for the filler hose.

I am not sure which way the sending unit is supposed to face.

I also got the anti-squeak material but not sure how it adheres...no instruction whatsoever.

Yes that is correct in picture. The 1/2" tube on bottom is the filler neck breather tube connection. it should line up with tab on large filler neck.

The vibration dampning material I got for my new saddle tanks on my piuck-up just went under the tank hold down straps. Yours may go between the body and the tank as well.

Yes, body and tank. It’s not held on with anything, but you can use a little spray adhesive on the ends to hold it in place during installation. You could’ve saved yourself a few bucks and used 30lb roofing felt if you or someone you know had some. I actually used some 40 mil PVC shower pan liner I had left over.

I was talking to a guy that just bought a new fuel tank for his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, and it did not come with any vibration dampning material that it should have. I suggested exactly what you said...roofing felt.

Where is the factory location for the black ground wire to attach?

the cross member in front of the tank driver side. you should see a 1/2" hex high up in the corner. Look from in front o rear axle

Anybody here ever replaced the tank? What kind of special Hell do you run into with the filler hose and clamps and rubber gas lines hooking up?

I am pretty sure I will find them dry rotted but if not I plan to replace all of them anyway.

I can't believe there isn't a youtube video of this, all I can find is side tanks. Maybe it is so stupid simple there is no need.

It's not hard. I undo the filler side of the hoses, the ground, the pass side strap front and rear put it to the side. jack with a piece of ply to spread the load. Undo the the driver side strap remove it. Lower tank some allow it to tilt to driver side, reach in and undo fuel hoses and tank sender. then lower and slide to driver side, until filler hoses clear and go all the way down.

Helps if tank is empty esp when installing.

i usually contact cement the anti-squeaks to the straps prior to install... floor jack and some lumber to stabilize it...

roofing felt is not as thick as the OEM padding on the K5 tank. I went tru this some time ago. I used a made in Canada Spectra Premium tank. I was still able to find the tank pad OEM from the dealer at the time.

My fuel lines were original and dry rotted on top of the tank. Replace the line for sure. Also check your metal lines. Mine had rust in them and I replaced with inline tube lines.

This is one reason I detest dual exhaust. At least on my 80's K5, if I crawl under the truck on the passenger side, I can sit up (literally) just forward of the rear axle, and see the top of the tank. Which gives good access to the fuel lines. I have FI, so the lines are threaded, but it's still easiest to reach them this way except maybe dropping the tank. You can drop the tank a bit and try, but it never wants to sit right on the jack, or stay in one place. The fuel filler hoses are the real bear if they haven't been off in awhile. I remove the clamps, and try to twist them in the middle so they unstick from the fittings on the tank side.
