new grill concept

Well, it would be like making a reapir manual. First they buy the rig then tear into a billion pieces, then put it back together.
This wasn't quite as ez as i made it sound. Even owning the rig, i have quite a few hours on this grill reverse engineering it. I highly doubt i will make any other years.
Sorry, I just dont have the time or the rig to do it.

No problem, totally understand. hell, I cant finish myown stuff muchless do for others too. Great job none the less.

Did you readjust the grill for easier hood latch accessability. I always break the top fin directly below the latch on the plastic ones.

no adjustment, i just made it so it doesn't hit and I'll never break 1 of these 3/16" thick bars.

Congrads

Great looking piece. If you were to sell this Item? What would the cost be?
Thanks, Dan

well, i had another shop quote the material and laser work......just in mild steel was $200 each and $270 in aluminum, And this shop is alway the lowest price in this area. ....so it doesn't look too good for aftermarket resale. I wouldn't pay that much for 1.

$270 for AL isn't that bad. The whole OEM grill surround is now in the $900 range (new).

but realize...this is what you get for $270. The material and the laser'd pieces. no assembly or powdercoat/clear anno etc.... That is just for the raw material cut to the shapes.

I bet you could sell "DIY" kits for 350.00 all day long!! I might even buy one at that price & the shipping would easier/cheaper too. Very nice!!

Just my .02 cents.

Later,
Buddy

round 2......

I cut a new one.....

Fixed a few things....
(1) bottom rail is shorter like the stock one.
(2) this one actually fits inside a completely stock outer grill.
(3) The horizontal pieces are all different lengths to match the shape of the headlights in the outer grill.

I think this one is good enough to send out for powder coat or maybe even bright zinc.

note: if you look close i somehow forgot one of the vertical rails at work...so now i need to wait till monday and dig through the laser tank to find it.

that is sick! well done and stout to boot. It would be interesting to see one in aluminum... Hint Hint:wink1::wink1:

I've got a few questions about the assembly and installation methods.
How does it mount? I think you mentioned coming off the radiator support but I'd like to see what you use could you post a detail pic of the mounting? Also How much welding do you think it needs? Did you have to do anything special to keep it from warping from the heat? It looks great I can't wait to put one on my truck!

i uploaded some pics into my album called grill... http://coloradok5.com/photos/showgallery.php/cat/951
i re-designed the mounts so there is now adjustment up/down and in/out so you dont have to drill the holes perfect and you can fine tune the grill with the outer grill.

heat is not a problem. these pieces fit very tightly together and its a quick tac on the inside of the grill. not much heat is put into it. I can weld 1 of these together in 15 minutes. i do however spend a fair amount of time clamping it so that all the puzzle pieces are pushed tightly together.

sorry to bring this thread back but i needed to show someone this grill and i needed to upload the final powdercoated version picture.
I'm still in great need of an outer grill (mine is all hacked up from a tube grill) and im trying to work out a trade (my inner for an outer). then of coarse i would have to build another one which im not looking forward to at all.

It's really hard to tell this grill is powder coarted in the pic. but it is.

Did you have to modify the outer grill in that picture? I'm still interested in an aluminum one in the next few months.
