new grill concept

I'd just take it to a couple local shops and see what they'd charge to weld it. We do small stuff like that for some cash in our pockets all the time at the shop I'm at. Especially since it just needs to be clamped down and tacked in a bunch of spots.

I have welded aluminum with that same rig and it did not look good at all and it was very hard. It takes tons of practice (On aluminum) I thought yea I can weld steel fairly good but aluminum It's a different beast. You will need 100% argon.

Even if it doesn't work, I'd be curious to see what the 75/25 gas does on aluminum. You probably don't need much wire and just some heat to melt the junction between each intersection. Try it on a scrap piece!

i cut some test pieces, i may give it a try.

I talked to the tig welders here at work and they are gonna weld it for me. These guys are good enough to go pro. Oh wait they are pro's.

TIG is the right way, ESPECIALLY with this project....

this would be a killer product for you first gen guys.... very producable i'd think........

I'm glad their going to do it for you. I would hate for you to have all that work into it and then a crap weld job.:waytogo: But by all means try that mixed gas and practice up a bit:D O-Yea I will be needing one for a 69. That's OK I'll wait I am patient.

X2

I will remind you that I'm also in line for the '69-'70 style insert if you ever decide to punish yourself with another 1st Gen grille project. :deal:

Who knows? your parts could achieve internet immortality as part of the "Might As Well" K5 build.... :D

:usaflag:

damn, that one looks bout the same complexity as the '72. Problem is i dont own a rig like that to test it and measure,

You guys wanna make me one for the 73 to 75 style, might have to get creative to get the surround but that would be way cool, a stock (looking) polished grille

aluminum - all done

finally got the aluminum grill welded up and installed.
In all honestly i think i like the powder coated steel one better - for looks.

It's time to put this thread to rest and come up with somthing new.
Im sorry, but i doubt i'll be building these for others....too much work. :frown1:

i think i put the bowtie on upside down. oh well, its not worth taking new pics and uploading them.
(pretend like you cant see my license plate number, im too lazy to blur it out)

can I buy one you have already made? aluminum or powder coated. I love this thing and would love to run it on my 72'.

thanks

Sorry - Makovai sold his Blazer last year and the grilles with it.

I still have my polished stainless one - but we are both on to new jobs and don't have access to cool toys to play with at work any longer. We talked long and hard about releasing these and selling, but didn't think it would pencil with the cost of producing / shipping them.

All the best

If you still have the file you could probably sell that to someone like DIY4x4, rdn2blazer, Avery4jc, or one of the other guys who work in fab shops. You're right, it's unlikely you'd ever sell enough to make them a bread & butter item. However, there are probably enough people that would buy them that someone could make a profit.
