Hey yall, it wouldn't let me post in the other section, so i figure i gotta post here !

little back ground: 1978 gmc jimmy with 350, full time 4wd. picked it up for 475, took it to a friend who got the edelbrock carb figured out and fixed some little things etc

here she is ^^^

Been driving her around some in the neighborhood to test out everything

The guy who helped me fix it said i need a crank case filter for the thing on the top left hand side of the motor? What exactly is this ? is it just a filter i shove in there? My neighbor said to run a short piece of rubber hose off of it and attach a filter on the end of hose?

how do i get the bulb out to replace it ? nothing seems to want to budge ? is there any trick to this?

Thanks in advance !!

Welcome aboard!

That tube off the valve cover is missing a rubber tube that goes back to the air cleaner, you'll have to hunt that down if you want original. Looks like that air cleaner is not the one matching the truck....

For the tail light, you can un hook the battery and twist the remnants out with some needle nose plyers. Both of those bulb sockets on my truck have been replaced due to similar issues.

Please make sure you unhook the battery. Or there will be more questions coming. :deal:

Im just going for reliability right now! Will it affect the vehicle in any way not having it go back to air cleaner?

Good deal, thank you ! What does the orange wire looking thing go to ?

You got it !!

She's got a factory Cb which is pretty cool, even got a GM logo on mic! Couple people I've talked too said they have never seen one like it before

Also, its still got the original manual if anyone need some pics from it

I like not having the valve cover exposed to the atmosphere. Go grab a plug when you're hunting for bulb parts

That orange wire looks like someone hill billy wired for a trailer light. It needs to leave. Hopefully the wiring under the dash isn't :poo:

U-Haul had special light bulbs with trailer leads coming out of them--probably one of those..good luck getting the corroded bulb base out of the socket--I'd be looking in salvage yards for a good one, chances are you may end up ruining the socket by the time the bulb is out of it..

You can just buy the "bow-tie" filter that belongs in the air cleaner ,it clips onto the housing, and instead of installing it in the "correct" spot, just pop it into the valve cover grommet, and keep that curved pipe in case you decide to put it back original..I wouldn't leave that valve cover port open,it'll suck dust & dirt into the engine..

Funny,I just sold a GM CB stereo to a member here just like that one..dont see them too often nowadays..

What exactly do you mean grab a plug? Do you have a link please sir? The speedometer and battery gauge appears to be working, the engine oil pressure gauge and fuel gauge do not tho, radio works as well !

Do i have to pop those three metal tabs or just twist the bulb housing?

Can you link me to the bow tie filter please?

What do the CB stereos go for?

If your lucky you can get the bulb free by twisting the glass part,or the remains of the brass "shell" of it,in the socket..use gloves if you try twisting the glass--or needle nosed pliers on the brass shell part..you'll probably have to dig out the rest of the glass from the bulb's base first..

The "bowtie" filter is an FB-59 AC ,but any parts store will have one in whatever brand they carry, they can cross the AC number to theirs..bowtie filter.jpg

As for the factory CB/stereo,I practically gave the one I had away, because it needs repair, but did work...I have seen them listed on craigslist and e-bay for 100+ bucks in "unknown" working condition...

Don't forget that to remove the bulbs you need to push the bulb inwards a little while twisting it...

I would go to the parts store and see if the have a push in valve cover breather to replace that tube

I had the same thing in a '77, only mine was a 4 speed 117mm tranny, with spicer factory hubs. It would climb a tree in granny. I think, even with 3.07 gears, it was still 180 to 1 ratio. A rock-crawler buddy of mine wanted that tranny. I put just over 300,000 miles on it, but I'll have to say, there sure wasn't much body left to it! Chevy's do RUST....and we don't use salt on the roads out here (or at least we didn't).

I also had a '77 Blazer...and and still have the '87. Had all three at once for a while, running. Kinda wish I hadn't got rid of them all...but the Wife would have killed me if I kept them in the yard...I ain't THAT Red Neck. ;)

Get that hole filled with a "cleaner", like said above, yes, the "wire" hanging out from the light was a way trailer lights were done. Use to see it a lot in fact.

And--Somebody should warn you, that truck is Front Wheel Drive.

Yep...put hubs on it, and switch 'em to "free"....and that truck won't move. Those axle's will just spin in the hubs...

Did you know...

There are 2 drive axles in a Chevy!

I think what he means is, it's full time 4X4 (not front wheel drive). So, if you put unlocking hubs in the front, and unlock them, and don't lock the transfer case, the transfer case will work like an open diff and the truck won't go anywhere. You'd have to put it in H Loc. Which is fine, but a waste of time. You will need an NP203 part time conversion kit.

Yup...when not "in" 4 wheel, it IS front wheel drive....funny how many folks didn't know that.

Or just put a 205 in there, and get rid of that belt driven model, the 203.
