New member, looking to buy my first K5. I have found several 305's but I am looking for a 350. Good deal? The guy is asking $4500.00
*I cannot post pictures because I have not made 5 posts, so this is a useless post is suppose*
It is located close to Columbus, Ga, 130,000 mi, 350, 4" lift, 33" tires (need replacing). He said that it smokes when just started up, said it is the valve seats. Zero rust, small transmission leak, fuel injected.

This site is really difficult to get started in.

Anyway, pictures will help... but I cannot post them.

The body is near perfect with newer paint.
I have not gone to look at it yet as I live in Pelham, Al (near Birmingham) and it is about 2.5 hours away. I plan on looking/purchasing it Sunday. The only thing that troubles me is the "valve" problem and the tranny leak. Is this pretty common or a lead-in to a bigger problem?

A near perfect, never modified, never taken off road, low miles, mint interior would be about 5k.

130k, with smoking motor, leaking tranny, modified suspension (lift kit), is not mint.

Recent paint is something that would worry me. Id rather have a ****ty factory faded chipping paint than a new paint job that is probably hiding something, oh say, body damage and/or rust.

The start up smoke is a common issue, mine would only do it once every 6 months on occasion, but since ive been using Lucas oil treatment, it has not done it in over a couple years. Im pushing 138k on my 305 motor.

Tranny leaking could be an issue, depends on where its leaking.

Honestly, I hope your taking someone with you, dont know how old you are, but if your under 25, take your dad or a mechanic with you. Its too easy to get caught up in all the "cool" stuff like shiney paint and lifts, etc.

If tires need replaced, figure $150bux per unless you find some used ones or find a killer deal. so your going in the hole 600bux minimum, depending on how bad the tranny leaking is , that could cost you. So they told you about the things that are wrong, I wonder about the things they arent telling you.

Make sure you take your time, dont let the seller push you into hurrying up or not letting you really check things out. You need to drive it, put it in 4x4, check all the lights, make sure nothing funky going on.

Wear old clothes and crawl all over it, in it, under it, etc etc.

I am not new to buying used cars, just used cars this old. I have wanted one for a while and have looked at a few and found out that there is alot of crap out there. I want a unmolested 89-91 and they are hard to come by. I am willing to re-do the suspension to factory specs. The one "good example" had a 305 in it and the price was not right for a 350 swap. I plan on keeping this for a while and use it as a weekend/ tow truck for my boat. Off-roading is not really an issue.

You should be good for pics now. I know it seems like it's hard to get started here, but this has been the only successful way we've found for thwarting spammers.

So far $4500 seems high for what you described, but pics will tell.

How much do you want to spend? There is a member with an 89 black and grey one on ebay. If you want an "unmolested" truck pay as much as you can upfront. Generally, people that have cared for these trucks over the years want a little bit more for them...but youre more than making up for the initial price in what you would spend to put it back to factory.

If you are flirting with 4500 it is going to pay to be patient and you WILL get a nice rig. People that are charging that much should be happy to prove how well its been maintened over the years (ie they are the original or 2nd owner and know the history since new) or would be able to prove the asking price with substantial receipts.

Great point. I have seen some on ebay but I was planning on staying more local. Unfortunately, the most for sale around here are abused/lifted. I appreciate your input. Are there any other trouble areas on this particular model I should look for.(besides usual rust spaces and the obvious used car issues).

Looks not bad, but the driver's seat looks a lot more like 230,000 than 130,000 to me. Usually at 130,000 the foam is still in perfect shape and the plastic side trim hasn't busted off yet.

When you go look at it check other interior wear areas. Heel pad area of carpet, pedal pads, door handle/door pull, steering wheel very smooth (textured when new) writing still legible on the turn signal stalk...that sort of stuff. The truck will tell it's own story if you know where to look.

Be very thorough checking for rust. Most common is the lower seat belt anchor area for the front seat belts. Tailpan by the tailgate. Neither are really easy to inspect with a full carpeted interior.

good deal, thanks for the info. I did not mind replacing the smaller interior items i.e. turn signal indicator, what I did'nt realize is that is a great tell on the amount of use.

Thanks!
keep it coming!

If you go look at it, bring a decent camera and take a ton of detailed pic's of everything. Underhood, underbody, drivetrain stuff, detailed interior pics, etc etc...then post em up here. The pics you have are a start, but we'd need to see quite a few more, and up closer to make a sound judgement for you.

So you know, you have accessed the best source for info and support that you can have for anyone who has this vintage and make of vehicle.

Welcome to the family and good luck on the hunt. To me, that asking price is high enough that he will have it for sale for a while. As has been said be patient and let him sell it to you but make him work for it.

If you are willing to spend that kind of coin on a rig then consider letting the "Brotherhood" help by looking within the group for a rig that will suit you or at least look outside your area. A brother could check out another rig for you and you might save enough money to be able to pay for a plane ticket to get it back home.

Rear bumper is tweaked, not a big deal, but look for other damage in the rear that being hidden, hopefully it was just a mild hit or something stupid... Crawl under this thing, be prepared to get dirty, check every floor support and crossmember, check where the seatbelts mount to floor near the rockers, check the rockers thoroughly, check where the floor is boxed in front of the rear tires, the tailpan... These are notorious for rusting and that new paint job could be hiding alot... Looks like a nice truck, but looks can be deceiving. For $4500 it better be perfect and need nothing fixed in my opinion. There are still a lot of nice blazers around, be patient and take your time when deciding if it's the right one for you.
