New oil filter comparison video

The AC/Delco oil filters I bought this summer were "made in mexico" and now have a different part number (PF1218 vs PF35)--the only difference I can see is the PF1218 has an anti-drainback valve that does nothing on a Chevy V8 with the filter mounted open end up..
I can't say if the internal construction is any different,but I bet it is not as good as the older AC filters were,the "can" feels thin and cheesy..

Wix always had the best reputation as far as parts store filters since I was a counterman starting in the late 70's,but many garages and walk in customers didn't want to pay "double" for a filter when they felt a Fram or Lee,Group 7,etc,were "good enough"..
Group 7 filters we sold were made by Purolator--many garages stocked them,but they were not the same as the Purolator ones inside..

Supposedly all filters must meet "new car warranty specs" in order to meet warranty requirements,but I've seen some knock off brands that look very close to "good" brands and they are usually inferior quality "counterfit" parts imported from various third world sources..

I liked using the Wix 51394 filters on my Chevy's,they are a 2 quart capacity and were used on many medium duty trucks like C-60's factory..
 
I always wondered about why they did stuff like that, a 350 is a 350 regardless of if it's in a c60 or C10.
Why the big filter?
 
The theory is the added 2 quart capacity helps the engine stay cooler,along with the larger "can" on the filter which catches the wind and cools the oil a bit more ,and also the increased filter area allows for longer distances between oil changes--even though they still recommended a 3000 mile oil change interval,its unlikely most fleet trucks got serviced when they should have been..

Maybe back in the day, but any modern company understands the benefits of proper maintenance, because down time costs you more. So these days, companys are pretty much on the up and up.

I'm not saying they neglect maintaining the trucks..most fleets are pretty anal about taking care of their equipment..
Though some businesses seem to operate on the "run it till it fails,then fix it" mentality..

Some fleets like those for utility companies often end up being used under emergency conditions, and things like oil changes can be delayed until things get back to normal..like when an ice storm hits and they send workers to another state to help out with repairs..the trucks just get checked out to make sure they have all the fluid levels up to par,decent tires,etc,and do the upkeep when the trucks return..

I used to go up to 6000 miles between oil changes when I used the 2 quart filters,and the oil always looked clean when I drained it,not black like usual..though I never put a 2 quart one on my 6.2,I think it should have had one factory,the same filter a 350 uses is all GM put on them..7 quart capacity stock,9 would cost a bit more,but protect it better..
 
There has been multiple flow tests, a stock AC delco filter outflows, and outlasts the k&n. Much of marketing bs about cold air and k&n.
I agree about the K&N marketing bs, BUT, I really do like this one on my TBI 350. It keeps the stock air cleaner base. It seems to flow much more air than the stock closed cover with the filter material on the top cover. When you get on it, you can hear much more air flow coming in. I don’t care for the chrome though, wish it came in black

Summit says it’s made out of plastic but the K&N site says it’s powder coated black and weighs 1.9 lbs. last I checked plastic doesn’t weigh that much and can’t be powder coated.

save the money if you just want the sound . . . . flip the stock lid over = the same effect .

and your sucking in a LOT more hot air over the cold air from up front like the factory let them pull in .

Unfortunately, more noise doesn't mean it makes more power. Flip the lid on any engine, instant more noise. My 305 w/Q-jet sounded powerful with the lid flipped. It wasn't. lol

I suspect the lid simply dampens the noise...you just can't hear it when the intake tract is sealed.

I doubt any of these trucks in production form, 4bbl BBC or TBI SBC, are limited in power by the air cleaner. They are all made for low end torque, and the cams reflect that.
 
Yeah, I wasn’t expecting any HP gains with that K&N lid. It may however be beneficial for those that have a non-functioning or stuck cold start flapper in the stock snorkel
 
I heard the hype and stopped buying dirt cheap filters. But when I went to change out my very last one, I found it had spit a plug into my oil line, partially blocking it. :doah: :angry1:

I had already decided I was done buying them, but this failure didn't help things.

Fortunately, a 6.2 diesel doesn't need oil flow in order to run smoothly. :wink1: :haha:
 
I have always used AC Delco filters, and air filters. Actually, any replacement part I always use AC Delco if available. A little of topic here, but where are those emojis to put into a post? I don’t see any options while posting?
