New owner of 91 K5

Yea just recently hit up harbor freight for a new 3 ton jack and jack stands.. Got it all for under a $100. Just waiting on warm weather to tear into it! Anyone have a diagram of the drivers side window switch? I had some wires off so it needs rewired, I looked in the haynes manual and didnt see anything on it.

Update! Well I put my truck in the shop yesterday due to not having the time to complete everything. They are going to put new manual hubs, new front u joints, new steering stabilizer, alignment, new tie rod ends, wheel bearing and who knows what else! It is going to wind up costing around 900-1000.

Wow. I'm about ready to go through the same thing with mine.

good luck! I almost started to do the project on my own, I just didn't want to mess anything up. Next is all of the body work that needs done. That I will have to do myself

I just picked up a 91 this week. It needs a bit of work but it's mostly cosmetic and I already have a 'project' truck that hasn't been on the road in quite a while. This one is going to be a driver, so with the limited time I have, I'm just going to take it to a shop to check out the front end and get an alignment. It probably needs a steering box, and who knows what else.

One question I have for you - do most of the vehicles around you rust? I read about the galvanized sheet metal to reduce rust. I guess that just reduces it though, yeah?

oh yea rust galore around here! My truck was from North Carolina at one point according to state tag on my windshield from there. My tailpan and post are gone to the point my tailgate is only attached on one side. The other side is the bracket with the bolts where it broke from the mount. My floor pans could use some work also. These are my next ventures. May I ask what you paid for yours? I paid a little high for mine, but when you really want something sometimes you pay a little too much.

2900. There were some nicer (and more stock) rigs available, but this one had rebuilt engine, transmission, and rear end, all within the last 50k. It runs great (so far) and it already has a small lift, 33's, and a softtop, which were the three things I wanted to add anyway. The nicer ones were asking for more money, in some cases a lot more.

I feel like I got a decent price - if it wasn't for the extras that I mentioned above I would have offered less. In my case a lot of the really expensive stuff that I wanted is already done.

It's easier to find something that isn't rusted out up here, so we're kind of lucky. I did look at a lot of Gen II's that had rust but weren't too bad. Mine doesn't have any visible rust. I'm going to rip out the entire interior carpet this weekend - hopefully I won't get any unpleasant surprises.

Thats awesome.. I ended up paying $1900 for mine and it has 33s, 3 inch suspension lift, rebuilt transmission in the last year with warranty. On a side note.. Is it just me or is TABCO pretty cheap on stuff but kind of hard to figure out exactly what you need from them!

Nice. Is that a typical price around there? I've been watching around here for a couple months and haven't seen anything advertised that cheap. I think the lowest 90-91 I saw was asking 2600.

I am thinking it is right around normal. Most of the ones I see range from 1600-3000. There are only about 3-4 on craigslist currently around here.

Well quick update. I called the shop today to see how much was left to do. All they are waiting on is the manual hubs, so they should be in and on it tomorrow. They was going to check into putting my back window in but declined to do it due to my tailgate being jacked up because of my rusted out tailpan! Looks like my tailpan replacement is going to be sooner than later. Also, does anyone know about what size screws are used from the sash on the back window that go through the brackets that attach to regulator?

Also, I have been researching some of the 2x3 steel tubing DIY tailpan replacements! They look great and I could do it for reasonably cheap due to having a friend that works at a welding shop. I have searched it multiple times and only came up with a little bit of information. So can any of yall that have done it give me some advice? btw thanks for everyones help

Got my truck back from the shopt today.. $933 dollars later. It is nice to not have to drive it like a semi and have it ready for making any turns 500 ft ahead! This weekend the top is going to come off and the rear interior is getting gutted. I have been wondering how it would look to replace the grey interior with black sheet metal. Have any of you ever tried it?

It had pics until the forum went down and I lost 2 pages lol I will post some once this rain stops. We have had 2 tornado warnings in 3 days here.

Here is what little bit is left of my tailpan!

Yea once time and money allows for me to do so. I have have to get my back glass put back in soon or I will be replacing ALL floor boards in the thing. My front boards were a half hack job by the guy who got it before me. Basically cut 2 pieces of square sheet metal and halfway welded them under the seats.

Update. After pondering replacing multiple floorboards and a tail pan. It might just be easier to pick up a P/U frame and join the club of Trazers! I have been searching through the forums for 2 days to find a build thread of a trazer conversion someone did. The member had created a steel tubing bed like you would see on a baja truck and it had a tool box by the fuel cell. If anyone can put me in the right direction please do! Also, I know they all will require custom brackets, but what years may fit the closest to my frame?
