I've been driving Chevy trucks since I was 12 and have owned a few, but I just recently bought my first blazer and so far I love it! It's an 84' 305/700r4/208 with 6" rancho front springs and 4" blocks in the rear and 35" BFG all terrains and 10 bolts front and rear. Before I even picked it up I knew I wanted to upgrade it, and when a front axle shaft snapped on the first day I had it I knew it would have to be sooner than later!

I started building an 83 K-10 a couple years back and have a pretty good idea of the direction I wanna go with this one...

-6.0L LQ9 swap/built 700R4/LoMax twin sticked NP205
-D60 open/14bff detroit locker and discs with 4.56 gears
-42" Irocs with roughly 6" suspension and 1" body lift...64" rears with a shackle flip and zero rates, and I'm not sure what I wanna do with the front suspension...I'd like to move the front forward a few inches, but still be able to use cross-over steering...one thing I've considered is the 5" long travel deavers and move forward mount forward using B-52's or Abomb from DIY...guess that'll be firgured out when I get there

But that's the major stuff...of course I'd like to do a cage and other mods, but this stuff will be my focus for a while, it'll be slow going but it'll get there...let me know what you guys think, I like hearing others' opinions and learning new things as well.

I was impressed with how much suspension travel I had with this setup...but this is just after the axle shaft broke!

nice stuff pic
sounds like a plan to me
those 64"s will need the front hanger moved forward or are you planning on having the rear axle move back several inches?

I was thinking of leaving the front hanger in the factory position and seeing where that puts me with the 42" tires...I think a zero rate pushing the rear axle forward 1.5" will put me right where I wanna be.

Temperatures have been pushing near 100 here in Tucson and with no AC i Decided to ditch the top...and the doors were soon to follow, I like it but sure do get alot of funny looks! Trying to round up a set of manual doors so I can start on some half doors and quick release pins...planning on keeping the manual doors for monsoon season and winter time.

Took my lady's truck out on a trail run today...how bout a truggy based on a 05' seirra ext cab with a 6.0...hmm now just how to convice her its a good idea?

No real updates on the blazer...did score a 14bff, some 56" rears and a 2wd steering box pump and lines all for $75 here locally...but theyll just be holding down my garage floor for a while!

A guy here locally was parting out an 83' 3/4 ton 2wd that he was gonna just take to the crusher...and he even delivered the axle to my garage!

Beats my busted 10b front and wore out 10b rear! Just keep an eye on craiglist for guys parting out vehicles...

hey

What Tbux was ALASKA to Hardcore for ya to wheel in so ya fled to Arizona???:haha:. Shoulda kept that 83, it was going to be a monster. By the way, I bought Daves Old K5 which is funny cuz I'm the guy he got the K5 from originally!. I've redone the suspension totally and tossed in a Dana 60 front, 39.5 Iroks, headers, soft top, new paint, brush guard, Winch etc etc. Anyway, Glad you like your K5

Nah my tour was up in AK, wish I was still there though! I saw your build up, the blazer is lookin good, I dig the orange! And I still have the 83, its basically a rolling chassis just sitting there...unfortunately!

So the more time I spend thinking about it and researching parts....the more I lean towards doing some repairs on the blazer and selling it and builiding the 05'...of course that means a few things have to fall into place and my lady has to agree with it...

personally, I would never "build" a newer truck. They are just not that capable without spending all the money deep in the pocket. Also, an old truck with scratched to hell paint is cool, the '05 in same condition looks out of place.

I dunno I've been weighing the pros and cons...it already has a 14bolt rear end, 64's out back, the motor I want, a decent tranny and transfer case...the only real problem I see with the truck is its long wheel base, but in time I'd move the rear axle forward and do some sort of cage/tube bed. I've seen some really capable long wheel base rigs, and with a flat belly and skid plate and 40" tires I think a nbs sierra could be a very capable all around vehicle.

Only update thus far: it wasn't the stub shaft that broke but the guts of the hub...so after retorquing the axle nuts (actual term?) and throwin in a set of new warn hubs I again have 4wd!!! So next is the brakes...I know its pointless to spend too much money on my 10b's but this is my DD and the brakes are almost scary...but the more and more I think about it the more I lean towards keepin' and building the K5 so more to come...

Doesn't matter what axles you're running, brakes are a must. Trust me. I had a front caliper seize for an unknown amount of time, and when i finally discovered it, half the rotor was gone, literally. One smooth side and the other just ground off to fins. Plus, parts for older chevy's are cheap:D
