New Soft Tops for 1st Gen.

I'm definately interested. Maybe next year...:(

I have the new top sitting in my living room and I am starting to doubt the new tops existence.:D Where did the guy go who already installed his???

Yes. I purchased the soft top for my 72 and so far I'm happy. It was fairly easy to install. I still have 2 snaps to add to each side and may go with just one. I did Silicone seal the snap screws when I installed them. The only problem I have so far is where the door closes, it catches the first snap. I have a little play with the railing and will try to move it as far back as possible to see if that corrects it.

More pics. The last one is out of order. The plastic thing is what the rear window attaches to.

That's pretty decent looking. Does it clamp down to the bed rails or use bolts? Their early pictures show some kind of clamps.

Brian,

It Bolted down right into the factory oval shaped slots on the rails. My truck had the loose internal nuts inside, and they bolted right into them. Because the slots have some play, I think I'll have room to bring it as far back as possible and avoid the doors. I rolled the sides and rear panel up and took the family out last weekend. It was nice to have the shade overhead and it did good in town. I'll get some more pics with the sides rolled up.

Ok. I think those slotted holes were only used for single wall tops and the double wall tops use a different hole pattern. Are there any extra holes you didn't use?

Yes Brian, there are a number of other holes that my double wall attaches to that were not used. The slotted holes were actually filled with some sort of paste that I had to dig out with a screw driver to get to. When I put the hard top back on, I'll have to figure out a filler or something to tighten the internal nuts to avoid unnecessary rattles..

Chalet, Thanks for the complement. I've had it for 6 or 7 years now and haven't had a chance to do much to it. Next is some type of Rhino lining, then 4" lift w/ 35's and posi/456 gears.

A little update. I sent them a couple of questions. I'm still undecided whether I want one or not. I do a lot of runs on narrow (Treed) trails. Scared a branch would make a big hole!!
Q: I have seen your product listed on a couple forums I visit. I would like to get one for my 1972 Chev Blazer. The problem I may run into is that I have a full roll cage in mine. In comparison how high does the top sit compared to the stock fiberglass top? My existing top fits on my Blazer with the rollcage.

A- If your hard top can fit over the roll cage..then the Softop should too.

Q: also heard that the window plastic cracked in very cold weather. Has this been remedied?

A- The Blazer and 4Runner tops are only recommended as Summer tops.

We don't have a problem with the windows...but Yes they can break in cold weather if they are rolled up. The rear windows are removable so they are easy to replace if they do break...where as the sides are sewn on..so would be expensive to fix.

We use a really good quality window material...but just want people to be aware of the chance of breakage.

We've actually only ever heard of one side window breaking in a 4Runner in the past 1.5 years that we've been selling these models so people are being careful.

We hear of a few rear windows breaking in our regular truck tops every winter...so are just making the Blazer and 4Runner owners hyper aware to avoid disappointment.

If you only use it in the late spring -summer and early fall you should never have a problem.

Hope that helps.

Dennis

I have the same concern as expressed in your first question. I have a full cage in my Blazer as well.

What would be most awesome is if the top just fit over my cage hoops, thus only requiring the use of the bed rails and the windshield frame rail to attach.

I guess the only way to know is to just buy one... or get one custom made perhaps.

I made my cage to go above my windshield frame for headroom and hopefully to help protect that area in the event of a rollover so I had no choice but to go custom made.

The stock hard tops do sit up above the top of the windshield frame an inch or two. My cage sits about level with the windshield frame and has about an inch or so of clearance to the roof. I'm considering one of their tops for a trip to Utah in Sept 2010. :)

Yeah my cage hugs the inside or the hardtop pretty closely. Less than an inch of clearance along most tubes.
