Hello all, I recently purchased a MINT "ha ha" 84 k5. It has a 305 and 700r4. The biggest problem thus far is I have nothing past first gear "no second third or forth." I have been reading up on this problem and have already checked the gov gear. It is good.

Previous owner "before he sold to guy I bought from" replaced the TV cable and that did not help. So I guess my next step is drop the pan and check the valve body. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

What does it do? Does it engage reverse? Does it even attempt to shift? How high have you taken the RPM's to try to get it to shift? Was the TV cable properly adjusted? Why did the PO change the TV cable?

My guess, without actually seeing it and knowing the answers to the above is that your next step is going to be rebuild/replace the transmission. I hate telling you that, but it sure doesn't sound good.

Still has reverse, I took the rpms high and let off gas, it try's to shift, meaning it leaves first but it doesn't catch anything further, kinda like its in neutral untilled it slows down enough or I give enough gas it pops back into first.
From what the guy I bought from said OO replaced TV cable because it broke. I have no idea if it was adjusted, I don't know how to adjust.
The only thing I can think of internally (excluding valve body) that would keep from shifting out of first would be the sunshell, been awhile since my trans days though...

Nice to have someone else from the "view"!! As far as what is wrong with your tranny I can't help at that one . Just thought I would say hello. See ya around town.

Thanks, yeah I went to Camden Arkansas to get it, its about 1.5 hours past texarkana. U been out to barnwell mountain in gilmer yet?

Pic.... ha ha "mint"

Not yet, getting the k5 back from paint today finally and still have to out the Dana 60 in the rear yet. I might go out there sometime soon though. Heard there are some trials out there that will tear some stuff up if you aren't carefull but that's what it's for.

Lift the metal tab on the TV cable and pull the cable towards the firewall. Get inside the vehicle and press the pedal completely to the floor. That is how you adjust the cable. Sounds like that may be all it is, but it will depend on how long it has been driven. 700r4's don't like having that cable out of adjustment.

Well because the cable was replaced it was not that easy, the new cable has a little screw that sets a block on the cable, so I dropped the pan to check at the valve. The arm that plunges the valve was about a 1/4 inch away from the valve. So I readjusted the cable so the arm was lightly resting on the valve. Put back together and still no go... there was a lot of metal in the pan so I am guessing prolly needs rebuild. O well. How easy is a Turbo 350 or 400 swap on these?

T350 is pretty easy, as long as you get the correct adapter, but you will have to change your drivelines since the 350 is shorter than the 700r4. Basically you would have to shorten the front driveline, lengthen the rear, and set up the vacuum lockup switch as well as a vacuum line to the trans. It is a lot of work when there are items that can be put into the trans you have now to make it much stronger. My plan is to eventually rip the 350 out of mine and swap to a BTO stage 3 700r4.

welcome!!

you're in the right place....:waytogo:

Welcome to ck5 and the joys of wheeling and wrenching on your own rigs.

I forgot to mention, you will also have to move the crossmember to use the t350. As for t400's you will need the trans, adapter, and the transfer case since they use a 32 spline output on trans and input to transfer case. I believe you would also have to do driveline work for that trans, although I am not 100% on that.

Talked to a guy at a local trans shop and he said he would swap in a 350 trans for $650, that includes transmission and labour... thinking bout it.
