New tool Box

I'm not about to get back into this argument.....

but I will say this... at that shop there was 2 old timers there who had been there 10+ years and the other for 20 years. One had a crafstman box, and the other had a snap... they both opened the same and were roughly the same age. Like I said... to each his own.

I will say that neither of them were ball bearing and they both opened like crap.

And I've already conceeded about the tools... so lets not try to start this back up.

I have my Dads box that he used back in the late 70's early 80's from snap on. Funny thing is it still works great and has a awsome stickers from the 25+ years on it.

Comparing 2 old non-ball bearing toolboxes and saying that is an argument against buying a NEW professional grade box is like compare apples and lizards. It just doesn't make sense.

You weren't around for the great toolbox thread of the century were you?

LOL yeah my tool box has to be magnetic and verified thickness by calipers!

I gotta get a picture of mine the nostalgia from the stickers is epic. I thought about getting it blasted and painted but I think it has a character all of its own.

I'm reluctant to get flamed on this thread, but here it goes. I have an old snap-on top box from the early 80's and although it's super small I can't part with it. My wife thought she was doing me a favor and bought me a matching set of Craftsman boxes, spent pretty good money on them too - In short, I hate them! The freaking drawers are hard to open once 'clicked closed' and if your not carefull two or three drawers will come open about face high.

If I wrenched for any length of time or made one red cent doing it, I'd go so far in debt buying one of those workbench style Snap-On boxes, my kids' kids would have debt from it.

BTW - Greg I hope those boxes that started this mess serve you for several years.

I bought my old Snap on roll away in 1998 I think. it was a 4500 dollar box new I got it used for 2500. I still have it today. it's full of all flavors of tools about 60K worth, mostly Snap on, Mac, Matco. Also a few craftsman, that I keep around to make tools out of.(bend-a-wrench)
I tend to be a little rough on the box...it's held up remarkably well.

From someone who has gone from a Snap-On K series to a ball-bearing Craftsman, selling the snappy was the biggest mistake I ever made with the exception of getting married. that;s another thread. the Craftsman just doesn't hold like the profession boxes. I have had it 2 years and I am due for another, it's packed and falling apart. Has anyone commented on the fact thqat Craftsman does make a pro series box that is just as pricey as Mac, Matco, Snap-on, etc? To me that proves that there is justification for a high$ high end box. The quality is much better.

I've never laid my hands on one of those Craftsman pro boxes but yes they do carry a heftier price tag. The ones I have seen looked identical to Cornwell boxes, so whoever is making Cornwells now is probably making the Craftsman Pro ones too. I don't keep up on that much anymore since I don't have Cornwell competition.

I've commented in the past how Craftsmen isn't quite as economical as it used to be years ago.. at one point a few years back I was pricing out large wrench's 1 1/2" and up... and was taken aback at the price... obviously not as spendy as snappy, but caught me off-gaurd...

saw a Matco guy down the street the other day from my marina, came real close to stopping and telling him to put my place on his route.. kinda miss having a tool truck... never had a matco guy, snappy for 25 yrs, a Mac guy for about 15, now nobody...

I was told its waterloo, not positive though. I've seen one and for the money step up and get a real box. Mac and Snap-on are really competitive on box prices right now

I don't know that it is Waterloo anymore. It was at one point, but someone told me they switched up. I have seen identical boxes for sale in the Warehouse flyers from some company I cannot remember. Eh whatever, Matco makes our boxes, that is all I need to worry about.
