Unfortunately the big block in the Burb is eating itself(rod knock), and it decided to do so 3 days before we left for our trip to Utah for the golf kart takeover.
I got real lucky and found this clean 3500 local for a reasonable price and it was not misrepresented.
Literally after driving it around the block and filling it up, I hitched up the ol tow box and sent it to Utah the next morning.
I have a tad bit of experience towing with an ls but that was in Ethel and it was a 5.3 vvt with an nv4500 which did fine for what it was but I never towed this heavy with it.
As you can imagine being an ls it needs all the rpm. This truck surprised me, it’s the first rig I have had that will accelerate uphill with authority so it has me thinking that old big block was hurt for longer than we knew. This has zero issues maintaining the speed limit on all but the biggest hills and even then it has little issue with keeping above 40 mph. The trailer and truck combined are 17100 which puts me over the gcwr 1100lbs an 8.1 truck has a gcwr of 22k so for me I’m not concerned as long as the thing stays cool, the weight did not feel sketch and the thing has no prob in a 40 mph headwind staying on the road and not creating a white knuckle drive.. I’m really stoked to be honest. I always wanted one of these gen trucks, but now that I’ve had all generations up to this year it’s kinda neat to see Gm really stepped it up. I got lucky to find a clean example and even with 185k miles it has only had the trans replaced last year, the rest of the truck is immaculate, not even the driver seat is breaking down. God put it there for me or something lol!
Spec wise it’s what you’d expect,
6.0 lq4, 4l80e, 4:10 11.5 aam(surprised by this I think it’s uncommon?) the higher 9900lb gvwr but ironically lower trailer weight of 9400lbs compared to a 2500hd lol wtf Gm?
I have been searching around a bit and I cannot confirm is the 3500 has a thicker frame or not? I know about the leaf pack difference and the larger wheels and tires. Does anyone else know if there are changes from the 2500hd besides those?
Anyway, super stoked on it! Also stoked to stay GM.. the Burb had 238k miles and I can’t be mad at it because it’s literally the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

Hey stranger!

3500 frames are different from what remember. That’s a clean truck. Nice score.

I figured I should probably check in once in a while!
I kinda wondered why Gm made this truck and the only thing I can come up with is if someone wanted a really really strong platform but didn’t want the bigger engines for some reason.. otherwise it makes no sense lol.

I think trucks like that were made for a lot of fleets needed 1ton payload capacity but didn’t need to tow or weren’t intending on towing.

I will say the feds bought trucks like that a lot for different departments.

I know guys that want bigger payload capacity and brakes, etc and don't feel like they need a duramax or other associated bigger line of engines.
Lots of k30s only ever had 350s.

That makes sense I guess. The payload is lower than the 2500hd but the gvwr is higher so maybe they needed that extra for other reasons?

Snowplows are heavy?
Along the same lines you don't need big blocks or diesels to push snow.

Another thought that comes to mind is landscapers.
Might want a heavy duty truck for abuse. Don't need more then a 6.0 to pull a car trailer with a couple of lawn mowers and weed wackers.

Of course you live in the middle of the f*cking desert. What would know about grass or snow maintenance? ;)
