New truck, what to get ???

Looking for some opinions/experences

I will be driving anywhere from 150 to 350 miles per day.
at least a 3/4 ton or single wheel 1 ton
4x4 is a must
crewcab needed
some trailer towing (up to 14k) not very often

Is the diesel really my only option ?

I am looking at all the big three.

I have had a super duty with a 7.3/auto (99) & a 3500 454/auto (98), 3500hd 6.5/5speed (00) in the past.

I found a NEW 07 gmc diesel/6spd allison, sticker is 47K, I can get for about 36k.


Truck will be purchased NEW.

What truck would you recommend ? Why ?

Gmc Classic Hd 2500/3500?
Gmc New body style hd 2500/3500?
Ford F250/350/450 ?
Dodge 2500/3500/4500 ?

From what I'v eread on another site, the 6.7 Cummins is having a ton of problems to the point there have been BBB claims and Didge is buying some back.

I'd give that engine another year or two.
 
I personally did not think the added initial cost of a diesel engine was worth it in my case, which is similiar to yours. My truck is a DD and just do occasional towing (6-10 times per year, and mainly for recreation purposes). I have not priced trucks for a couple of years, but when I bought my '03 2500HD adding the D-max was going to be at least $5-$6k so I opted to stick with the 6.0L gas.

While empty the performance isn't much different, and the diesel will only give you maybe a couple extra mpg.

Granted towing performance and MPG with a decent size trailer really seperates the two, but again I don't tow enough to justify it. If I towed more often it probably would be worth it.

I know the new 6.0L engines in the 2500HD are rated quite a bit higher than mine, and I think you can get a 6-speed auto with them, which all in all I would think would have pretty impressive performance.
 
In june I got an 03 f250 supercab4x4 with 6.0 ,the fuel is a bit more but ,better mpg than my 89 yoter.
Think of your overall costs, reg, insurance, fluid changes.
I wanted to sell mine already but I bought it for $14000, so I am sure wont find and another too soon with agood deal but think of the costs a year from now.

It's my truck. I love it. I think the "classic" is the way to go, here's two good reasons:
established model, not new model w/ bugs to work out
easier to find fuel since low sulphur diesel is okay (some places still don't have the ultra-low yet)
It's a 2007 "classic" d-max alli 1LT (cloth) 4x4 I've had it about 5 months, DD it, have 16K mi so far. Biggest/only tow load so far was 6K trailer/parts K5 from PA to NC hitting snow in VA mountains. Towed that no prob (as expected). I'd rather have a truck that is rated for more than I need (12K ball hitch 15,400 w/ 5th wheel) than be pushing the envelope. One piece of advice though, don't get in over your head on payments-they are the only thing I don't like!:D Good luck w/everything!
 
The 6.7 Cummins is fine in the Chassis Cab trucks due to a different DPF setup that is actually part of the Cat. No problems with C&C trucks. The new 6.4 Ford sucks IMO. The one I drove was pretty underpowered,same with the new LMM D-Max stock :( . The LMM does have it's advantages over the others if you can live with an auto tranny. EFI live will fool the EGR and DPF as well and give you any ammount of power :D and you can run a strait pipe from the turbo back on them already :D . PPE has a good programer out for the LMM too.
If I were to buy new,and I may, it would be a Sterling 4500 :D . Basically the same as the Dodge but cheaper priced. If used I'd get an 01'-04' Duramax or 01'-02' Cummins with a 6spd only.
 
2500 diesel. Pick your poison if you get an 07 with the emissions crap on it. They are all likely to have problems. I would personally see if I can find a early 07 or a late 06 that may not have all the emissions crap on them. I am not sure if the early 07 5.9L Cummins Dodges had all the emissions stuff on them or if they started that in the later 07's with the 6.7L.

I personally am a Cummins guy. I drive a 98.5 24v Cummins and LOVE it. I average a legit 18-19MPG with a good assortment of tools, ladders, etc in it. Driving is my job. I have been doing my new job for 14 months and have put 75,000miles (153K total miles) on my truck in that time. My Cummins has treated me well and I do my best to keep it treated well with good maintanence, tires, etc.

I love my Cummins. I only plan on buying one more truck which will be an 03-06 Cummins so I can get a true double cab so when I have kids I will have room for them.

You're all over the place in the first post...what's your price range?

You mentioned a '99 Ford, '98 Chevy and '00 Dodge...then a brand new Chevy...

Obviously if you can swing it get a d-max/alli combo in whatever configuration you want...it'd be the best dd/tow rig and get great mileage...

Other than that of the "older" choices I'd say look into a Ford or dodge...I run a 2000 7.4L 454 and although it tows quite well it is VERY thirsty even unloaded...

So I guess it really just comes down to how much you can spend...but definately go after a newer diesel if you can swing it...

I don't do this very often but search around bro... those are some very common questions that can be answered to great extent with the ol' search feature...

A lot of that depends on where you tow, what you tow, how often you tow, etc...

4x4-not necessary but, I wouldn't have a 2wd personally. Helps for bad weather (snow), or muddy trail parking lots.

Diesel-highly recommended depends on what ya need to tow though, gas can still get the job done.

Single or Dually-single is easier to manuever when not towing but dually offers better control when towing and higher towing limits.
