Newbie 1980 Chevy scottsdale build

The rear looks like a 12 bolt but still 37"s are too big if you are going to abuse the truck...

Thoose guys are dicks, there are cool guys over there but most of them think they are rocket scientist's.

try the general tech section next time, the a.holes avoid that section.

Ok so like I said I'm new at all this what do you mean by ten bolt and 12 bolt and all the foreign language your talking....

Look on the differential cover (the cover on your axle, its round) and count the bolts holding it to the axle housing.

Ok so I went out there and took a look it is a 12 bolt axle... god or Bad? and wht kind of axle should I have to be able to safely run 37's? What does a 12 bolt and 10 bolt and all that have to do about anything anyways what does it mean...

Well more bolts mean a stronger axle :woot:

10 bolt is the basic half ton truck axle, idk what more is in a 12 bolt, I beleive a 14 bolt is a DANA 60 which is a classification of axles. Bigger axles mean more heavy duty.

Im looking to find a 14 bolt for my truck after I get the new motor in so the 408 small block can unleash some burnouts without fear of blowing up the rear axle :thumb:

So would the 12 bolt be kinda like a Dana 44? I have the stock 350 motor in it and stuff I only have the intention to take it off the main highway to wither go mudding or just hit some trails not really looking to rock crawl.... I wanna put on 37's just because there is a good possibility that I might be able to get 5 of the free... Ya know... So thats why I am asking... If I dont take off road it is my daily driver cause my wife has the car for her and our soon to be son...

The 10 bolt usually comes with a 28 spline axle shaft.
The 12 bolt is a little stronger than the 10 bolt; it usually has a 32 spline shaft.
Ideally for us we would have a 14 bolt AKA D60. There are different D60's though; there is a semi floater or a full floater. But I'm not the resident expert here, I'm still running my stock axles with upgraded shafts. There are tons of threads about axles if you check the [search] button up there.

I have no Idea what a 12 bolt is in all honestly, I thought a 10 bolt was a 44 but im most likely wrong. 37's are pretty big tires IMO and to be running them for a dd with a 350 and possibly stock gearing and stock tranny.... Doesnt sound like a good idea to me. If its got deeper gears, then I would say that it would most likely work for a truck thats not gonna be beat on alot.

But if you wanna turn 37" tires with stock motor/tranny/gears, ima say screw the free 37" tires because although they are free, you are gonna spend alot more money and time fixing the drive train in the long run.

Lots of bad info on this page so far.

A 12 bolt is marginally better than a 10 bolt, but neither are anything special. They are both GM axles, not Dana axles. They are both weak semi floating rear axles.

The 10 bolt replaced the 12 bolt in the late 70's, although there isn't a solid break. Some 1980 models still used the 12 bolt. For all intents and purposes, a 10 bolt an a 12 bolt are no different.

A 14 bolt is also a GM axle, NOT a Dana 60. There are two different 14 bolt GM axles, full floaters (better) and semi floating (basically just a bigger version of a 10 or 12 bolt GM axle).

There are also Dana 60 rear axles, but they have 10 bolt covers and are made by Dana, not GM. Dana 60 rear axles are also weaker than a GM 14 bolt full floater.

True, kind of. A 12 bolt really isn't much better than a 10 bolt.

You are correct that a 10 bolt is just the standard half ton rear axle. A 12 bolt is just the older version that the 10 bolt replaced.

I beleive a 14 bolt is a DANA 60 which is a classification of axles. Bigger axles mean more heavy duty.

All of that is wrong. A 14 bolt is a GM axle, not a Dana axle. A 14 bolt and a Dana 60 are COMPLETELY different things. A GM 14 bolt (full floater) is also stronger than the majority of Dana 60 rear axles.

Dana is not a classification of axles. It is a BRAND NAME of an axle manufacturer.

Man I feel retarted. Im gonna leave now haha.

I will remember this info now though lol. So i dont get quoted 18 times again on my wrong info lol

This is completely wrong. A 14 bolt is NOT also known as a Dana 60. A 14 bolt is a GM axle. A Dana 60 is a completely different axle, built by Dana, which only uses 10 bolts to secure its differential cover, not 14 like a GM 14 bolt axle.

There are different D60's though; there is a semi floater or a full floater.

This is right and wrong. There are two different kinds of GM 14 bolts, not Dana 60s. The 14 bolt semi floater which uses a 9.5" ring gear with a different shaped differential cover, that uses 14 bolts, and the 14 bolt full floater, which uses a 10.5" ring gear, and has 6 bolts retaining the axle shafts on the outer ends of each side of the axle.

But I'm not the resident expert here, I'm still running my stock axles with upgraded shafts. There are tons of threads about axles if you check the [search] button up there.

Yes, there are.

I am not trying to be a jerk, sorry. I was just correcting the bad information that was posted. I didn't want to confuse the original poster, and I thought is would also be informative to you two who posted the misinformation.

Again, sorry if I came off as a jerk, I won't even mention that you misspelled "retarded." Er, wait.....

Thanks for clearing up the facts Martin. That's exactly why I threw in the disclaimer saying "I'm not the expert". :waytogo:

Yeah I like em they are pretty good looking... I think I am going to see how much it will cost to Chrome them... I have decided on a Color scheme.... I think I am going to go Gloss White, re-chrome everything (Nose Clip, Grill, Front and Rear Bumper, get chrome diff covers, and Diamond Plated bed rails, Maybe get Chrome Rocker Panels) and then I am going to have HillBilly Deluxe wrote in Red in the Budweiser Font on the Tail Gate where it will say Chevrolet and then get Jensen (my Sons Name) Front Center of the Hood... I am looking to find more modern style gauges, http://youtu.be/BbKNO0Odl4M kind of like this guys gauge cluster any Idea where I could come across some like that?

Depending on how pitted the wheels are, polishing would be an option.

After that maybe a clear coat of some sort to keep them nice.
