newbie with problems

I think I'm going to suck it up and just fix it myself. The legal route seems like a PITA and I don't really have time to deal with that. So far my girlfriend posted a comment on their yelp page and I have been spreading the word to everyone I know. Hopefully word gets around and karma comes back and bites them in the a**. BBB is my next move.

Well besides that I need to gather some parts. Where would you recommend getting them? Online? autozone?

So far these are the parts I think I need:

Rotor
Wheel studs ...size?
Lug nuts
Possibly new rim

Which spindle socket will I need for these hubs?

For these parts, your local parts joint should be fine. For a 10 bolt front, I believe it's a 4-point socket.

Yep, 4 points. I have one with a solid outer ring, and 4 teeth coming off inside that ring, get this type:

There are some out there that don't have the outer ring, I was told to stay away from them because they don't grip as well. So don't get this type:

And your parts store of choice should be able to tell you the proper wheel stud size. I have no clue what the size is off the top of my head, but I've bought them from autozone before and what they sold me was right.

Yesterday, I filed a complaint to the BBB and asked for a refund of my money from the initial repair in order to fix my truck. Hopefully they will except my case. I should know in a week or so.

Today, I talked to a lawyer/judge friend of mine. I told him what happened. He says if the situation is not resolved through the BBB that he would send over a letter to them.

Tomorrow, I will be picking up my new parts and get ready to install on my next day off.

Huh. I've never had any issues- not that I've done it a bunch, I've had the front end apart twice, so 4 total wheels. I saw your post in the thread you linked though. Maybe I've just been lucky?

i had it happen to me years ago on my first 60 and on a sat afternoon . try getting new nut with pin on sat afternoon when all parts stors / dealers / junkyards closed .

So does the second socket I posted prevent the problem? Because it looks to me like it would cause the same issue, but that's just looking at a picture and not seeing it next to the truck.

second the fingers stick out . first design the deepth is to shallow on some and were the pin hight is it can hit the inside lip of the socket and or catch the edge of the socket and pin and snapp it off.

i did fix / modify my buddys socket years ago i barrowed with a die grinder and 2 min time with 4 spots ground to clear the pin .

its just a fyi to guys to make sure the closed style socket dosnt break the pin on ya.

i have all open style in my box and no real pop off problems for me . but living in the rust belt i dont work on much older than my own or friends stuff.

Good to know, thanks! I'll have to pay closer attention to mine the next time I use it, see if I need to make a few mods to make sure I don't break anything.

Ok, in retrospect those smilies are way too hard core for minor grinding on a socket. Where's the smilie with a little dremel in his hands?

I'd used mine a bunch with no issues before that happened I didnt even know it broke that off till I tried linning the holes in the washer up. fixing it with with 4 little dimples ground in as sweetk30 said with permanently fix it

Make sure your wheel studs are long enough for the wheels you have on there. When I first got my k5 I took the front wheels off and the lug nuts were only holding on by about half an inch or so. I got lucky I didn't lose a wheel too.

Today I received an email from the BBB. They have accepted my case and have sent my complaint over to the shop. Also today I started taking off the rotor. Messy...

So far Ive got the rotor off and now Im stuck.

I need to know If i can take aprt the rotor and get that middle piece off of there. The rotor I have now (below) does not have this piece. Did I get the wrong rotor?

Also I have been trying to find these lugnuts and so far have only been able to find these short stubby ones. Does anyone know where I can get thes

e longer ones?

You have to knock the wheel studs out of the back of the rotor and the spindle will come off, then you transfer the new rotor on to the spindle and drive the studs back in. Best done with a press but I've made due with a hammer. Make sure to use a sacrificial lug nut to hammer on when driving them out, do not hammer the stud thread side without a lug nut on there or you will ruin the threads and have to get new studs.

Try Summit to order a set of lug nuts. They should have something to match.

Just be careful you don't mushroom the head at all, because then you get to have fun cutting the stud. I've hammered them out without a lugnut on there without issue before, but being older and wiser (hopefully) now I wouldn't do it again. Since you're looking for new lugnuts anyways, I'd go ahead and sacrifice one.
