My daughters '04 Frontier is running poorly and stalling under a load. It's thrown several codes that I've tried searching but the returns seem to be a consolidation of popular reasons and are not specific. For instance, P0303 code is a misfire but the related reasons list A) ignition parts B) fuel injectors or harness C) EGR D) low fuel pressure - wtf? That kind of info feels like any direction I go is a Hail Mary repair.

'04 Nissan Frontier 2wd XE 3.3 V6 NON-supercharged

P0303 cylinder 3 misfire ???
P0328 knock sensor
P0400 EGR flow ???
P0430 catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 2) ???

Any suggestions? Even a good resource to search would help.

Cyl 3 injector overfueling causing a knock and out of range o2 reading. Egr I dont know. Switch injectors around and move the problem one and see if it changes the code.

Don't hate.... since I don't have a code reader I had Autozone to read them. Their system recommends replacing the distributor (based on ASE master tech feedback). It would be easy to do but not cheap.

:doah: You were supposed to reply with an easy widget swap that would fix it all. I've never done it but I assume the injectors would be easy to swap but not exactly a quick job.

Can't help on the Nissan, but anyone with an obd2 car should have a Bluetooth adapter and Torquepro app. Invaluable.

I'm just a service advisor. I pretend to know what I'm doing at a counter all day lol.

That's what we would do first but we just stick to trucks.

I've been putting it off because I could, I see one in my future now.

But did you stay at a Holiday Inn last night??

The cat code and knock code are most likely symptoms of the real problem, a egr sticking can cause missfires, I would start by inspecting ignition parts and moving them to other cylinders to see if miss moves ,and go from there .

I talked to a buddy with an import shop about the codes and it appears the p0303 is typically related to a bad distributor so... here goes my first Hail Mary.

I'm not up on all the codes and what not, but modern vehicles seem to be REAL hard on plugs. In my extremely limited OBD2 experience (I've owned exactly three OBD2 cars) twice a misfire code on two different vehicles was triggered by worn out plugs.

My '04 went 140K miles (until it was hit, and I sold it running) without ever needing a shop, but it needed plugs twice. No wires, nothing else you might expect. You could see carbon tracking where the compression had been pushing out between the porcelain and steel where the plug pieces are joined together.

there is a cleaner you can get( most auto parts houses carry it about 10 bucks) and try to clean the egr but most times there to far gone to clean

The only nissans I've ever dealt with would go bat shit crazy with a dirty MAF. Not saying it'll fix your problem but for 10 bucks and a can of cleaner it wouldn't hurt.

Just had a friend with a Buick acadia that was throwing miss fire and o2 codes.

I could not find anything wrong after 2 hours. Turns out she pulled into a gas station, but the cheapest gas in. It was e15. 3rd one I have dealt with.

It's fixed! Turns out it was the distributor after all. Apparently, it's common for the distributor to develop excessive wear in the bearings and then the shaft wobbles causing it to loose the signal to the cam sensor which is under the rotor. So she lives again!
