No 4x4 to Front Axle Question

If this is the story that I am thinking of he was in Washington State?? Maybe I should just say somewhere up north and he and his kids and maybe grand kids got stuck.

Man... if this is the same guy, I'd hate to see the gas bill from hauling a Suburban with a travel trailer from AZ to WA and back. :eek1:

OK, I am not sure if I am following the threads correctly but I am NOT the folks that were stranded for several weeks. Those guys are now in jail for some reason (not sure what).

Northern AZ gets snow most years. Yes, there are 2 sky resorts in AZ. Our property is between Kingman and Flagstaff. Elevation is right under 6000 feet. There was a ton of snow that fell in a very short period of time. Our "camp site" is in a valley so the snow hung around. It was knee deep. Should have taken pics to post but was more worried about keeping warm. We have been up there in similar conditions and the Burb had no problem. There is a steep hill going into and out of the property that with only the rear wheels spinning could not get the Burb up the hill. Wound up having my brother "rescue" us but we still hiked 4 miles out of the valley so that he wouldn't have a chance of getting stuck. As it turned out, there was only about 4-6 inches of snow outside the valley. Who knew?

Anyway, will be checking out the front hubs and d-shaft on Sunday. Hopefully, the problem will be obvious.

Thanks for the tips and info.

OK, put the front end on jack stands today. Looks like it's the driver's side hub.

Locked the hubs, wheels off the ground, passenger side tire spins and can see the axle ujoint turning. Turn drivers side wheel, only hear a "whirling" sound and the ujoint doesn't move.

Will be ordering a set of external hubs in the next day or so.

Cause: Several months ago I hauled our old 31' travel trailer up and over a steep hill and down a 16 mile dirt road in 4low. Guess that is a bad thing. That's when the poping sound started. Guess it was too much for the Warn Premium hubs to handle.

Warn Premium hubs are guaranteed for life so you can get a new set for free. I have beat the piss out of my Warn Premiums and have yet to break on. I rockrashed the hell out of one and it still worked. You just had to use a set of plyers to turn it.

AZ Overdrive I am glad to hear that I was mistaken.

I would take that side apart and check things out. You may even have a broken axle or stub shaft.
I wouldn't rush to throw parts at it until you take it apart and check things out. You may even find that there is something holding the hub from fully engaging.

I know this is an old post but thought I would followup with the results.

One of the Warn hubs was not engaging. The grease that I packed it with caused the hub not to lock. Replaced the hubs and all is well.

I now have a "spare" set of front hubs I keep in the Burb. Just cleaned up the old ones and they work fine. Now when I go into 4x4 I give the front DS a twist by hand to make sure both hubs are engaged.

Also, I removed the beauty ring from the front wheels (crome that goes around the hub) so that if this happens again I can remove the hubs on the trail without removing the wheel. I have the old external type hubs so now I have access to the 6 mounting bolts. Hmmmm, wonder if I can find a D60....
