No gauge issue solved - where does it go?

I had posted a "no gauge" issue a while back; found a severed pink with black stripe wire severed near the alternator; fed it 12 volts and viola!

Where is this pink/black wire supposed to terminate? I would think it needs 12v only when the ignition is on but not sure. Is the alternator stud hot all the time?

It goes to the field terminal on the alternator The three wire plug, not the battery post.
