no more jammin gears

theres nothing wrong with my 465,205 combo, eight out of ten times, the standard is awesome, but theres those few times where a auto would get me over the top so much easier, with less beating on my chevy, its a 80 shortbed, tank, battery, toolbox in the bed,3/4 axles,39.5'' tires, bad ass truck,90 percent of the time,i wanna tackle the toughest trails possible,no way am i lazy,i know this 465 has a awesome first gear, buy my 488 ratio will make up for it, also looking for any big truck boys in northern colorado,or close to cheyenne to go wheelin with, later

I have two trucks, 84 blazer with a th400, and a 77 k20 with a 465, I love driving my K20, but it's too damn long for me...

Which is why my blazer is now getting the 383/465/205 swapped into it...;)

The swap will include, Tranny, flexplate, new shafts?, different column, bracket on the frame that the shift linkage goes to, different pedal assy (unless you don't mind having a random 3rd pedal), I haven't noticed a difference in cross-members...I've taken apart 5? trucks to make my 2 and they all looked the same.

If you do end up swapping them, don't hesistate to ask for pictures...and let me know if you want to sell some of the clutch brackets...;)

if the concern is more of a dd rig... and gas mileage... what about a nv4500 or nv5600???

best of both worlds.... I could not do without my granny :haha:

but OD would be sweet and keep the granny

after all the replies back about keeping the 465,im starting to think i might regret it,if you were close,i have an extra 465 mated to another 205,just happened across one at a junk yard here, couldnt pass it up though

If you really want an auto, swap it in. If you like the stick but need more control, put a doubler in. It won't cost much more than a 400 swap, and it would double your crawl ratio.

Personally, I'm still torn on the auto to stick swap. I DD my rig in the city, so it is a valid concern for me. At the same time, I would much rather have the stick when I head to the mountains.

Do it. I dd my truck and all summer I was going 45mins in and out of Boston during rush hour with my 465 and I couldn't complain at all. I think my left leg is now stronger than my right by now...

Daily driving in the city has nothing to do with a manual. You simply don't drive like all the other sheep out there. You get in the right lane, put it in first or second, idle, and let people cut in and out from in front of you all they want.

I did it in major metro traffic for a year or more, and it was fine.

My dads truck with a nasty mechanical clutch? Heck no, that thing ticks me off the first time I try to take off.

if you change to an auto, your gonna miss the rev it and drop the clutch for instant power with the auto. my previous woods truck became a totally different animal when we swapped in a 465/205. the blazer i'm working on now, i wouldn't have traded for it if it had the auto. i think you'd miss it, imo.

i've done a lot of thinking about it,and hearing from all of you,i think i will stick with the 465,the truck hardly ever sees the street, sometimes i will drive it to the colorado trails, mostly carnage canyon, places like that, mostly trailered though, you guys really convinced me,maybe just be a little more patient with it,any one want to go wheelin this winter, give me a hollar, thanks

I didnt see it brought up... but do you have a mechanical clutch or hydro??

I converted to hydro and LOVE IT... wished I did it a long time ago.... now my legs are about equal size... :haha:

and also it is a heck of a lot cheaper to replace parts for the sm465 than and auto

i have 203,000 on my 86 k5 and all i have done to my 4speed is replace the clutch twice in its life and i just now put in its second slave cylinder which i only replaced because i replaced the clutch and didnt want to bleed again.

and lets just say you completly blow up the sm465, you will feel a lot better going down to the junk yard and spending 200 bucks for a used one with over a 100k miles on it but still shifts brand new.than an auto that will cost you more and probably would need a rebuild.
