No more smog on an 88?

yes your motor will run fine without egr hooked up. no codes thrown or anything. as to performance no noticable change. as to longevity of motor it will increase w/o egr sending hot carbon through your intake and gumming everything up. i have a 366 carb motor converted to a 350 tbi system that works great w/o the egr. don't know about emissions.

just my .02

need to read some info on how it actually works???

good info on the egr process, i had noticed a slight miss when i first start out but i attributed that to the timing being slightly off. i would have hooked up the egr but this motor has no way to do this. i'll have to go through the dash to see if bulb is burned out for ce light. the motor i took out of burb was all coked up on intake side. so i assumed the egr was responsible. maybe it was malfunctioning. don't know. just my experiences hope they help. thanks for the egr info. :)

Your CE light should come on with the key turned to run, but the engine not on.

If it doesn't, you've got an ECM failure of some type, or bulb failure. (or wiring related to either of those)

I'll throw my 0.02 in based on my experience. I have a 79 that the PO stripped ALL emission stuff off. (carb not tbi) I put the emission stuff back on - (yearly inspection to register). My truck ran much better with emission stuff on it.

EDIT - No factory air pump on mine.

Out of our 3 TBI vehicles('89 S-10 4.3L, '89 GMC V1500 burb, '91 Chevy V2500 burb), none of them have air injection. There is a spot on the serp bracket for an air pump, but it's not there. The serp belt routing diagram doesn't have it either.

ibelieve air injection was only required on california models, from what haynes and chilton say. and my 89 burb doesn't have it either
