Oh ok, I’ll check tomorrow when I pick up truck. The transmission shop is ordering a new case for transmission so not sure if it’s possible to do the correct case with existing parts. I’m gonna ask them if they are doing that. Then I will find correct cover. Thank you guys for all your help

This is probably going to step on some toes. That is not my intent.

Taking your truck to a shop to get worked on has got to be extremely expensive. I don’t know your finances and I am not asking. That is your business. My issue is the quality of service you are getting when you pay for service. You have a 350/350 equipped truck with a carburetor. 1987 was the last year those 3 things were sold by GM together. 1991 was the last year the front axle was sold.

Guys getting paid to work on vehicles get paid by the hour. Each job has a “book” time a job is supposed to take. A good tech can work 40 hours and bill at least 60 hours per week. That is how they get ahead. By working fast on systems they know. Unless the employee parking area is full of vehicles of the same era as yours and the customer lot is full of the same. I can imagine they will do whatever they can as cheap as they can to get your truck out of the way. Whether it is the proper fix or not.

It is your truck and your money to do with as you wish. There just seems to be a pattern on the forums I frequent of people getting a vehicle they really like, taking it to a shop and then there is normally a fork in the road. The shop charges so much they end up selling the vehicle because it cost too much to operate and maintain. They get hosed by the shop so bad that the vehicle is worse than before and they have no money left. The vehicle gets taken apart by the shop and then never gets back together because the shop doesn’t have the knowledge to fix it. All the forks end with the owner without their vehicle and often without a large sum of money as well.

Be careful with going along with everything the shop says I guess is my point. I hope you didn’t take offense.

No offense taken, my pockets aren’t deep for sure. Unfortunately I don’t know how to fix everything myself or I would just fix myself. Some things will need a shop. I get what your saying though!

I have a comment here.
When the th350 was working there was no incentive to get the 700r4 to replace it.
Now that's not the case anymore.
The cost now is the same you should get the 700r4 instead.
You will thank us later.
Unfortunately I don't have a good running 700r4 in 4wd but I do have a rebuild able one.
My advice is to either look for a good used one or just rebuild one and never look back.
I can even give you the tcase that normally comes behind it.

I’m glad offense wasn’t taken.

I was going to make that transmission swap suggestion too but didn’t want to come across too pushy.

Something that might help if you wanted to do the work yourself is the military manuals. The K5 Blazer is the same basic vehicle as the military M1009. Engine, transmission, transfer case and some of the electrical system are different. The knowledge bank here on CK5 is tremendous. More knowledge is always welcome though. Here is a link to a guy that sells parts. He also has all of the Technical Manuals for the CUCV trucks for free:

The TM ending in -10 is like an owners manual. -12 is how to lubricate everything. -20 tells you how to troubleshoot and test just about everything. Things like fuel pump, lights, blinkers, wipers, brakes are all covered there. -20P is an exploded view of every part on the truck. The part number listed is the original Delco number that can still be searched. -34 is how to take everything on the vehicle apart to its smallest component, check it and put it all back together.

Knowledge, tools, desire and time are what you need to do the work yourself. Finding the balance is your job.

Ya I’m starting to think I should just go with a 77r4 transmission as well. Would I have to change a bunch of things to install it or would it just need different drive shafts? I’m assuming drive shafts won’t work due to sizing

I might have the driveshaft too but if it needs shortening it's not too bad.
Not much will need changing but I have just about everything you need, and can help

yes my bad, the switch unlock the torque converter clutch when brake are applied. If it didn't unlock there is a chance of engine stalling

Oh ok gotcha thanks, I’m gonna talk to iceman to see what he has before I just start ordering stuff. I think I’ll JB weld the current transmission if it’s a small crack to get me by for now. I’m picking truck back up from shop tomorrow and I’m gonna tell them not to order the new case

Where is the crack?
If it's the bellhousing I have a bolt on bellhousing

Your 82 should be the first year of the 700r4, you might already have what you need in the truck, unless that truck was late 81 and has the th350c which also had a lockup converter.
We need to dig more into what you have

It’s gonna be leaking where the transmission pan bolts up on one of the corners. I’m picking truck up today so probably Sunday I will drain fluid and remove the pan to see for myself. For all I know the shop could have just not put gasket on right crossing my fingers.
