no tuning required carb problem *UPDATED* carb in

vacuum leaks??

You might have a vacuum leak if you have to turn the idle speed way up to keep it running, and are having stalling problems-(if its due to no choke, the symptoms will go away after it warms up)...

You cant bolt an Edelbrock Performer carb directly to most stock GM and some aftermarket intake manifolds without an adapter...It may bolt on and work, but the base of the carb does not match the intake's gasket surface properly, and it will allow a huge vacuum leak!.(spray carb cleaner at the base and see if RPM's change while idling)..it will never run right if it has a vacuum leak..

The throttle linkage might need some tweaking and modification of the bracket that the throttle cable and detent cable hook into-(if its a TH350,or the throttle valve cable on a 700R4)..dont run it without the cable to the tranny adjusted right if its a 700R4,or it wont live long..I've installed many performer carbs, and most of them I did not have to mess with any adjustments other than the idle mixture, and they were set pretty much where I put them in the end, right out of the box...I think they are a great street carb, but they dont like hills or being "tilted" very much..even with the "off road" kit installed...

I do have the adapter on there, BUT my dumb butt did forget one of the gaskets I think. I saw a gasket sitting on my kitchen table on my way out the door this morning. Figured it could wait till I got home..... guess not. I'll fix that and adjust the bracket for the throttle back a little bit to take away some of the length of the cable. Maby that will fix my problems.

watch that adapter..

The adapter used to allow using an edelbrock performer carb on a GM Q-Jet intake will fit on either way,but only one will be the correct way!...make sure the "square" pattern side is toward the carb, and the Q-jet side with the "hips" on it is facing the intake....I bought a few good running 350's that I paid "junk" price for, just to get the edelbrock carb and intake setup, and found they had the adapter on "upside down"...no wonder they couldn't get it to idle right or run decent.. :surepal: :screwy: :rotfl: :rotfl: .. Making the accelerator cable and detent cable brackets work can be a pain..I've spent more time making THEM work properly than it took to install the intake and carb itself!..

Don't know what your current drivability problem may be, but listen to Paul (and others) who've said it does not work off-road, even with the kit. Paul is dead on correct. And I speak from experience as well as converstations with the Edelbrock techs back some 10 years ago when I first tried to run one of those little AFB knock-offs. Needless to say, I got a refund and a q-jet.

The battery comment was because you will be recranking a flooded motor constantly. Has to do with the fuel bowls dumping their fuel down the throat when not level. Just a simple design limitation and the only thing you can do about it is get a q-jet...

Everything runs fine now. I turned down the idle and adjusted the air/fule again. I didn't forget the gasket and I adjusted the bracket with the throttle cable so I can go wide open throttle again. I think it's running real well now. It turns out I had a carter carb on before this. Aparently the "carter ring" was bad and it was dumping fuel constantly. That would explain the 6mpg. I'll find out today on my way home what my new MPG is. I'll update the thread then for anyone that wants to know.
