Thanks Carcinogen: My block does in fact look similar to the 1980 type block, but where the 4-way would go there was a wire coming out. I"ll compare the picture to actual later tonight. Is it possible there's yet a different layout for 1985 - I found a wiring diagram and it looked like there was a separate small block marked "convenience center" in that. looks like the cigarette lighter and 4-way and maybe one other thing were in that location. I didn't find anything under the wheel behind the service panel other than what looks like after market cruise control. may have to grab a mirror.

Some progress... I found the 4 way flasher location on top of the steering column. Not what I would call an ideal spot. I replaced the existing flasher with a new one from Advance Auto Parts. Still no joy, but... now at least the two indicators in the dash light up. All the bulbs are known good, and all of the parking and blinker functionality has been confirmed. I think there may be LED's in the rear side markers and maybe the rear - would that affect 4-way flashers?
Yes, typically LED's don't have enough of a load to flash properly. Either excessively quick blink, or none at all. Need an "electronic" flasher if that is the only issue.
