i've got a 92 suburban 1500 4x4. i get a noise from the rear end when i give it gas. when i let off it goes away. it's almost a low whining noise. i'm thinking it's a pinion bearing. how hard is it to replace? do i have to remove the axle shafts, spider gears, and pinion? can i just pop the pinion out and replace bearing and reinstall?

Could be a pinion bearing, carrier bearing, wheel bearing or the brakes. I could even be a u-joint, but that usually comes with a vibration.

To replace a pinion bearing, you'll need to get a new crush sleeve and crush it to the propper ammount. If it's the inner pinion bearing (the one next to the gear), it needs to be pressed on/off.

If it does happen to be a bearing (pinion or carrier), it may be cheaper/easier to swap in a new axle.

thanks for the tips. there is no vibrartion, just noise when i give it gas, no noise when i let off or coasting. i'm looking for the easiest and fastest way to do it. just got an 03 2500hd and going to sell the burb soon. don't want to put a lot more time or money in it. i know they will say something about the noise when they drive it.
