Noisy headers? *Update, big gaping hole! I must be blind. Pictures...

Craig , I think I still have a set of exhaust manifolds from a '73 K10. If you want I'll check & get some pics. Would these be for your K5?

OK, maybe not.

They should be the same, sorry for not responding sooner...I skimmed your post and I read it thinking you were going to post pics anyhow. I am interested in seeing some pics if it's easy for you to get them. Thanks man...

I was just about to post some stock SBC manifolds FS. 1979, 49 state (no AIR) manifolds. I'll add a pic after sun up.

Couldn't hurt to double check your timing too. Mine was a little too far advanced, and the pinging/gurgling sound it made definitely came from the manifolds, not the mufflers.
I re-set the timing, and now it sounds niiiice.
Plus, its free.

Personally I did not like header wraps when I ran them on my Cuda. Big pain to install, and I don't know if they were worth much. I suppose they were but I didn't notice and difference.

In your truck I would run stock manifolds that were gasket matched, and call it good.

If you were to buy new headers I'd get ceramic coated, but I don't know if you'll like them any better. After the cheap headers I wrapped got tossed, I ran some nice Hedmans that were ceramic coated and the price was reasonable from that outfit called Summit.

I still notice the additional noise from the Thorley's I run now, but they are not ceramic coated.

Here's the pics Craig. I believe they are correct for the truck It was all original 'cept for the paint.

That's what I would need as long as they have no holes or rust-through. Selling? PM me.

Now I feel like an idiot! How did I miss this?!

So I'm changing the oil today and I see two little spots on the driver's side collector. Hmmm they look like they might be holes. Got the pocketknife out and sure enough the tip went in. Started feeling around the top side of the header and lost my finger in a quarter-size hole! You guys think this wouold cause an annoying exhaust noise?! Maybe headers (even thin-wall) don't sound so bad after all  . This hole points right up to the floor at about where the pedals are so I didn't see it while laying underneath the truck. I'm pissed that I didn't check better but am relieved to know the source of my noise.

I'm still gonna go stock manifolds but I'm off to the parts store to get something to cover the hole in the meantime.

Here are the pinholes that caught my attention...

And the gaping hole that drove home my suspicions...

You will hear me brag no longer about my Hooker Headers that were put on in 1977. They're played out and rusted out. :D

Well that's your problem right there! :haha:

You should have seen mine, when i first got my truck, each side probably had a hundres small pinholes... plus the pass. side muffler was blown out... it was a loud and long ride home that day on the highway.

Well I buttoned up the hole to get me by until I get my manifolds. Man is it NICE & QUIET :). Now I can enjoy the low, throaty tone of my Super Turbos and not the open header underneath my front floorboard.

So nice to be able to get on the gas a little and not wake up the dead in the graveyard across town.
