Yesterday I noticed a groaning noise coming from the rear of my truck when I stop at a red light or stop sign. It tends to only happen when The truck is in gear. If I put it in park or in neautral the noise goes away. When I acclerate there is no slipping and shifts smooth. Just that loud groaning noise. I'm scared that I may be developing transmission problems. Can anyone give me some input on what this might be and what I need to do about it?

Adjust your rear brakes if they are drum type, also check for oil or brake fluid contamination drum or disk.
Also check that your idle is not too high.

Next time you are stopped, with no traffic, very slowly ease off the brakes and see if you don't hear the same sound.

Odds are your brakes are not holding completely, and that is the sound you hear.

The rear brakes are drum brakes. A buddy of mine mentioned the rear brakes... There isn't any noises with the actual slowing down part it's once the truck has come to a complete stop. It starts off real faint, then gets louder. Once I release the brakes, it does the same thing in reverse. It slowly goes away soon as I let of the brakes and the truck begins to roll

Sure sounds like brakes. Your best bet is to have someone stand close and try to isolate where it is coming from.
If it is doing it sitting still, they need to watch the tire to make sure it is not creeping around slightly.
If it does it as you start off only, then you could have a broken or weak return spring in one of the drums letting a shoe drag as you release them.

Won't hurt to check the transmission fluid and the rear end fluid regardless.

Alright...I guess I'll check all of those things soon as I get the chance. Do I need to park the truck until I have it checked out or can I still drive it?

Dealer's choice on that one. Pretty much any problem will not get worse parked. But some things it would be fine to drive.

I would look under at the brakes, and if you see any wetness around them, then best to park it.

Otherwise, if its not getting worse, and you will be doing short trips that are noncritical, then you might go ahead and drive it while keeping your wits about you for any changes.

If you are going to hook 1500lbs of trailer behind it, put all your family in the cab and start up I75 transporting time sensitive transplant organs, then it might be best to find an alternate means of transport.........

LOL...alright, sounds good...I drove it to work today...so I guess when I get home in the morning I'll park it till i get a chance to check it out. It was raining like crazy today and my only other ride is a 2005 Harley Davidson.

If it rained like it did when my father and I went to eat at The Brahma one evening, you better stay off the cycle.
I was driving my Torino, and had the ignition system waterproofed. I had done my Jeep because I crossed rivers in it, and had some left over.

There was a cop standing on top of his drowned cruiser waving cars back. I eased up to him while he was jumping up and down trying to warn me off. I rolled down the window and asked if he wanted a lift.
He just stared and said no.
The water was almost up to my hood, so I moved slow to prevent a big bow wake and pulled into the parking lot.

They had built a dam out of towels at the door to stop the place from filling up with water.
Since everybody there was afraid to leave, it was almost full and things were getting a little drunk out.
Everybody else had eaten, so the staff took turns waiting on us.
Great steaks, and about the time we finished, the water had gone down enough for us to get out OK.

Nice place to eat. I was sorry when I heard it went under.

Next Monday, I took my car into the Ford place and convinced them to change the grease in the rear end.
They did not want to, because they said it did not need it after only 10k.
Then, when they found water, they wanted to tear it down and find the bad seal.

I told them to just clean out the water, put in fresh grease and give me the bill.

Never had any problems with it in over 250K of darn hard miles.......

Could be Brakes and I'd check the end play on your pinion yolk. It Shouldn't move much and if it does pop off the driveshaft and check That the pinion nut is tight. If it is and hasn't backed off your pinion bearing Could be going out Causing the gear Teeth to not mesh correct but you wouldn't hear that unless you are moving. Definitely sounds Like brakes are bad or not adjusted correctly. With them loose the brake cylinders will not put enough pressure On the drums and the truck can creep forward and make the brakes make Noises. Mine does it in four low sometimes because of the extra torque.

Ok, so last night on my way to my second shift about 11 miles. I notice that it wasn't doing it at all...then on my way home this morning, about 28 miles, Still noticed that it wasn't doing it...WEIRD...

Could have had some junk lodged in there. Stuck between the drum and shoes. If its been as long as you say it would still be a good idea to take a look and see what's left there and it's adjusted correct. Only takes a few minutes per side as long as the drum comes off. Lol. Then it's bfh time if not.

yeah, the truck pretty much just sat for about 6 months up until I bought it 3 weeks ago, so there is no telling what kinda junk has built up in various places. I changed the oil using synthetic amsoil and for the first 5 min it was blowing smoke out the tail pipe...thought I had a blown headgasket..ended up being just a lot of junk built up in the motor, and when I installed the door speakers I found old dried clumped up dirt/clay along with roaches.
