noJeeps 2001 duramax Frank - new headlights

Are you opening the bleeder screw when you pump it till fuel comes out? Then close it and pump more?
Sometimes I’ve had to do it 3 or so times before I got my airdog.
I've done that half a dozen times or so. I can open the bleeder and let the air out without pumping it, but then the engine really struggles to life after that.

One of the screw holes that hold the plastic plate on the underside of the filter head broke, so I used a washer and a longer screw instead, would that be a problem? If so, I'll just buy a new filter head and call it good, I'm at the end of my patience with this filter, I've been battling it since Saturday.

Yeah, sounds like it’s definitely sucking air then. I would triple check the connections at the tank or the filter head got fubarred.

Throw a heavy dose of fuel additive and run it. It'll be ok.
I run Stanadyne every tank. Purple in summer, blue in winter.
Good advice. I run Stanadyne blue year round in the suburban. My dad runs a cocktail of FPPF total power and 8+ cetane.

Also, if you want to get otherwise agreeable diesel folks into a shouting match, start talking about engine oil and fuel additives.

Keep up the methodical troubleshooting. You’re doing right by the truck.

David

PS: Siri autocorrected “cetane” to “vegan.” That’s hilarious.

I talked with one of the diesel techs at work and he thinks I need to purge the air from swapping out the sending unit, so I just need to keep purging... I'm starting to run out of battery, need a charger to keep going.

Pull the feed line to the fcim. pump fuel into a bucket using the primer. Also purge the hi pressure side using the shrader valve. You probably have lots of foam/fuel and air in there. Thats what my old truck did when the fuel lines collapsed.

That's a better price than I've been able to find so far, I'm going to troubleshoot a little bit more and go from there.

I did the fuel sender on an 08 Duramax and I don’t recall having any issues from that. I suggest a whole new filter head.
What year did GM decide to put a lift pump in the Duramax? Mine doesn't have one, yet.

I replaced the head on mine. I didn't have near the trouble you describe. That's about all I can offer.

But mine was also sucking air through split feed lines off the head. Both looked ok, until you pinched them a little, then it was surprising I wasn't having more trouble. Those blasted lines cost more than the filter head. Smart money probably makes their own, but I use this on LONG trips, so played it safe with OEM.

Replace the lines with marine grade hose. I had to do all the soft lines down to the cp3.

I believe the new L5P has one. But not aware of any before. Except maybe the vans?

Anybody know of a diesel parts supplier in Salt Lake that would have a filter head that I can pick up tomorrow?

That's the best option, even after looking around. I wanted to drive it to Eric's on Saturday, but there is nothing locally.

I'm not paying $40 to get it here 2 days earlier than free shipping would get it, so the truck will probably sit for a week at least. Grr, I really want to drive this thing, oh well, there's other stuff I can do in the meantime. Anybody want a tonneau cover? It's a real nice one. I don't want it, I have a box to put on the bedrails instead. And I'll pull all the badging and stickers off.

If you're giving it away, I'll take it. Been thinking about trying one out to see how I like having one.

Not the fun choice, but the smart choice. OEM, particularly on something like that, even if it causes a little inconvenience.

Also smart on the tonneau. I had one on my Ram when we lived in WPB. Liked it well enough most of the time. Good for keeping stuff dry in the frequent rains, or just "out of sight". But when I wanted to use the truck as a truck, man I cursed that heavy awkward thing every time. NEVER again.

Regarding badging, slightly funny story. I bought mine new as one of the last 2 '02 on the lot full of about 30 '03s up front and another 30 or more on the back lot along with the last '02s. The '03s were very distinctively different, and apparently nobody wanted the "old style" except me, who wouldn't ever consider the new style. They really wanted the last '02s gone, big manuf incentive, and dealer was ready to take about anything, plus the one I got had everything that could be added luxury and capability wise (plow package, camper package + rear electrical, towing, etc). Anyway, my final requirement was they take off ALL vinyl badging. Including dealer name, gaudy "4x4" on the bed, everything but the nicely done pinstripe down the upper crown. They had the body shop do it...
