Hey guys, my friend has a 2001 Chevy Malibu with the v6, head gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced. I am kinda new to doing engine work but if i was to just replace the head gasket would this be bad without planning the heads? thanks guys

Always resurface the heads with aluminum heads. Besides, i think those use the MLS gasket which requires a very smooth surface.

yeah u gotta resurface the heads, id think about the valve seals as well, also make sure to use the fel pro gaskets ms9800t i believe is the number for the intake set dont know about the head gaskets though, the reason i say this is because the fel pro uses steel to hold the gasket in versus the hard plastic gm uses to "solve" their intake tin gaskets rusting out, needless to say they are a notorious problem on alot of the gm engines,

o yeah make sure u dont mix up the pushrods if its a 3100 or 3400 cus there are two different length pushrods on that engine.

No worry on valve seals on these engines. I have never seen a bad seal yet on them.

Yes, pushrods are different between intake and exhaust and mixing them up will cost you some bent valves.
