My buddy is looking to buy a blazer. he has a limited budget and he wants to know the difference between TBI and carb. are there some basic pros and cons? thanks for all the information and advice.

TBI- Throttle body Injection...a single unit looking similar to a carb, but with dual injectors electronically controlled by computer feedback.

So are there any cons to TBI? and any cons or pros of CARB? he wants to know which one he should get if at all possible. thanks

I love the TBI in the 89 Jimmy! I think the 87 an 88 had the smog junk on them. 89-91 don't have the smog pump junk on them an makes for less headaches and looks much cleaner under the hood. They had the stupid smog stuff on the carbs also back to 82 I think.

Love the TBI, it runs and never stalls like a carb can. Although having a carb has it's pluses also. But I'm a TBI lover!!!! So I am biased!!!

considering the level of noobieness, I'd go with a TBI, less to mess with.

If you have plans for heavy engine modifications, a carb might be better or extensive TBI tuning.

The biggest disadvantage of TBI is if you mod the motor its very sensitive to the cam and vacuum.

So I am the noob buddy looking for the blazer. i would appreciate any help i can get while i am in the process of buying a k5. i dont plan on doing any heavy modifications right now seing as how it will be my first project K5. I am just looking for information on if one is better or easyer to start with. Thanks

that means it doesn't accept large cams without modification to the 'puter...the vacuum signal gets screwed up.

Really guys, tbi came out in 87...it works great, no comparison to a carb. Instant cold weather starting, optimal mixture at ALL times, no need to recalibrate jets at high altitudes,...its a great up grade from carbs. Just start it and go...

You can't go wrong with it. RE: a cam, a MILD low end cam (like an Edelbrock Performer) will work fine, give some low end torque where it's needed for these trucks.

p.s> and welcome to the best damn 4x4 site on the planet...:waytogo:

Body style
Engine
Trans

Those are the main points. What are your plans for the truck? You HAVE TO sit down and think about it, maybe write some stuff down. If you like the full convertibles, you're looking at 75 and older. With those trucks, are getting certain drivetrain parts. Same with any other years.

Thank you for all the information this is the kind of information i wanted to get. i will definitely save up a little more money to make sure i get the TBI for my first blazer. I will keep you guys posted on what i find or if i have any other noob Questions :)

Also the later years have the 241 tcase. 88-91? And i beleive 86 and earlier trucks with 700r4 trannies had a bit weaker trans, spline count or something i cant recall.

correct!:waytogo:

87 & up are the desirable trannys (700r4's)

upgraded innards & 30 spline input vs 27 spline for 86 & down

NP 241's have upgraded oiling system & a bit lower low gear...

That said, my 86 700 went 150K on my well abused burb...

time to buy a Lotto ticket?:pimp::thumb:

So i got a 87 K5 today it needs some work but im pretty excited about it. It runs and drives good its not lifted but it has 36" tires on it. and i only paid $1200 for it so i think i got a pretty good deal.

lol, didn't take long to
save up a little more money
I can't see how 36" fit on a stock blazer. It has to have a lift. Post a few more things about it and then get some pictures up. :)

yah i thought i was gonna have to save up more money but i just happened to catch a good deal but this needs more work than had anticipated also but it has the Tbi and it runs good and the transmission is good so its got the important stuff the interior just needs quite a bit of help lol so i will probably have quite a few more noob questions lol
I will get some pics up tomorrow
