noob welding pics...beware preety bad..

Every Miller I've ever used always spits, spats and farts for half a second before any welding/tacking happens. The lincolns seem to start hotter...no farting and spattering at all. Smoooooooth.

I totally agree, and have had the same experience. A tweco or Magnum gun on a Lincoln is the hot set-up for the larger machines IME.

We have Millers at my work, all less than 3 years old. Two have the push-pull pulsed aluminum set-up using AR/Helium mix and .047 5356 wire. They are loud, and also very smooth and easy to use. Have fun changing a liner on one of those though...:doah: Both ours have 30 foot guns on em.

Two of our Millers are the invertor style machines with a crapload of blingy options. The rest are plain jane 350 amp machines with separate wire feed units. All of them spit and fart for the first half second...it has to be something in Miller's electronic's because every Miller I've ever used starts 'cold'. I did my best to get my boss to start buying Lincoln's, but he already had a pair of Miller's by the time I started there and didn't want to mix and match.

a little off topic, the miller's that pop and sputter on start up, if its a digital, try powering off the machine and then power it up with the trigger pulled. Some of them will show you the run in speed setting when doing this and then you can adjust that speed.

My older machines have a slow start setting that I always keep in the on position. It's simply a toggle switch. It just allows the machine to run the wire in slow on trigger pull and then switches to full speed according the the speed knob. The miller 250x that is in the shop pops and sputters on start up and has no run in speed adjustment. To make it start smoothly it needs to be set hot or what I would consider hot as per the material being welded. Who knows, perhaps its a calibration thing.

If all else fails get the manual out and see if there is another way to adjust the run in speed. I think that's what they call it.

OK, back to our regularly scheduled stick welding program.

Miller= Lowest bidder :eek1:

Maybe, but with my boss he actually likes miller better than the rest. To be honest I could have got him the exact Lincoln equivalent for the same money. The Lincoln sales guy is pretty cool and usually gives me some pretty sharp pricing on stuff...

Kert, have you ever spent much time on Lincoln machines? All our Millers are in new enough condition that they don't sputter or outright fukk up when you pull the trigger, but they do all start cold(er) than any Lincoln I've used. It's not a huge deal, but something I've always noticed. Kind of like how Ford automatics shift a little different than GM automatics. It's hard to put a finger on what the difference is, but it's there.

Anyways...sorry for the hi-jack guys.

Flex core is horrible also. I had to weld some frame and I could barely even see the weld puddle.

I was using flux and gas.

But like the other said turn the speed up and try to form a puddle.

There is actual wire called Duelshield that is flux wire that is run with gas. With flux core you actually get better penetration but welding with gas is nicer.

We run T-91 dual shield flux core at work in .062" size. Shield is straight CO2 and it makes MIG look ugly. It also digs harder...

Not so practical for home use, but I figured i might as well add yet one more nugget of useless info to this thread. :doah:

I've run mixed shield gas with FCAW before, and didn't like it at all. 90 CO2 and 10 argon or ??

Sorry d00d...

Got any more pic's? Have you had a chance to practice anymore?

i do have to applaude you guys cause i was very hesitant to start this thread cause i thought i was gonna get flamed for sure...

You'd be surprised, if your putting forth the effort and trying to do things correctly and safely, you'll never get flamed. You'll always get pointers and help and such :thumb:
