What years did the NP 205 come with the indicator guage?

see the pic below. When the Np205 is shifted into 4x4 the switch is completed and the light goes on in the dash.

My NP 205 is from a 72 and does not have the switch. Can this be added? Where can i get the switch?

The 4x4 indicator switch is number 32

This is what my 72 NP 205 looks like.

as you can see no indicator selctor light switch. There is the two bolts. Can these bolts be removed to place the light switch in?

The shift rail is different on the 205's that used a 4x4 indicator light. You could find the correct shift rail and switch and swap them and make it work. The switch seems to be a discontinued product. There was a post about this switch recently.

I had to find a switch for my Dodge and it was discontinued as well found a NOS unit on Ebay. The Dodge unit is part # 4210979 although I imagine the Chevy part would be easier to find, Modding the shift rail should be easy if needed. Just test the wiring and switch most likely normally open would just take a notch in the rail in the 2WD position

You could use a kickdown switch from a TH400, if you're enterprising. Hell, any sort of momentary switch would do; you just set it up to close or open when the shift lever is this way or that.

I ordered this one for my 85 CUCV version NP205. And yes, it is a ball detent switch.

Seems to work - well, kind of. At least the 4x4 light on the dash comes on. I did the twin stick mod and screwed the switch into the bore for the fwd shift ball/spring/rail. Now when shifting in front (hi or low) the light comes on. Not really a 4wd indicator anymore i think . . .

thx for sharing the part number. my socket has a different style but it should work with a mod.

Also the NP205 I placed in is from a 72. It did not come with the switch. Should I tap the case or is it a bolt in?

bringing the thread back to life.

Does any one have some photos they can share of a NP 205 shift rail with the indicator switch. I'm not sure how to modify my rail.

Would I also need to tap some threads in the case so that the switch can be installed?

the threads "should" be the same as the regular screw in plug. ive swapped em out a few times before, i dont think youll have trouble with that.

The switch takes the place of the detent ball hollow bolt on top of the case. The old style shift rails should work without mods. Just take out the 3/4" bolt and screw in the switch. My 1979 Chev has the dash light.

Great! That makes thing much easier. The nut is called a popper plug. I'll take it out and see what happens.

From looking at a shift rail that was used with a 4x4 indicator light you can't simply remove a poppet plug and install the switch and have it work. It's been a long time since i've seen the correct rail needed but IIRC if he tried to use a standard shift rail the light would never come on.

I have about 20 cases in the barn, I will pull some rails and see if there is a difference.

That would be great! Thank you. I'm also in WA. Would you be willing to sell a shift rail and indicator light so I can modify my NP 205?

Also I found this from ORD.

"NP205's with the short front output rail will have a bar welded across the end of the rear output rail. This bar will have to be removed for our shifters to be installed. The picture below shows the earlier GM "short rail" system on the left and the later GM "long rail" on the right. For help identifying your rail type, note the length of the rails, the shape of the crossbar and the welded tab on the end of one rail in the short rail set. This picture shows the crossbar removed from the end of the rail."

That has nothing to do with the 4wd indicator light issue.
