NP 205 4x4 indicator light gauge

Here is a 1969-1972 NP205 (bottom) that never had the factory 4wd indicator dash light. The 1973-1991ish (top) case has different shift linkage and a 4wd light switch on the front axle shiftrail.

Here are some NP205 shift rails, left to right:

Ford, 1973+ style Chev, ORD modified 73+, 1969-72 Chev

That same top case configuration on the shift rails also came without a 4wd indicator light. You need to remove the shift rails to see the difference in the detents.

Here is a close up of the front axle shiftrail detent ball notches. (left) The 1969-72 has 3 equal depth notches. (middle) The 1973+ has the neutral notch not as deep so the dash light is only on when in 4hi or 4lo. (right) The ORD rail modified for twinstick has a deep neutral notch which is good for shifting but wont work with the factory dash light switch. The old style rails are no longer available new, ORD sells stock and modified newer rails and they are a direct replacemnt for the old ones with the addition of the connecter plate if you are useing the factory style shifter.

So there are 2 different 1973+ front shiftrails? Do you have a picture of the non dashlight switch one? Does/did GM/NP list 2 different part numbers? Smilar to the ORD rail shown?

GreenieK30 - Thank you for sharing the photos.

I have the 69-72 style case and shift rails.

What do you recommend I do so that I can have the indicator light in the 72 np205 I have. The NP205 is in a 78 so everything is wired and set to go using the old style plug.

There is not much of a depth change. Maybe the pludger on the switch could be shaved? thoughts?

Do you have a 1972 and 1978 NP205? Where in the dash are you going to put the light?

I have a 78 K5 orignally with a np203-th350. I removed the np203 from the 78 and placed in a 72 NP205 using the th350 adapter. I do not have a 78 NP205 as it came with the np203 (now removed). My 78 k5 (now with the 72 np205) is wired for the light in the dash. The light is under the spedo guage.

I don't currently have any 205's here. In the past I had two 205's apart (one did not use a 4wd light and the other did) at the same time that used the same "style" of shift rail although the detents were different between the two of them so I would imagine that GM did have two different part numbers for the rails.

I was considering using the switch to send a ground signal to my LS PCM to change the shift tables when in 4 low. Problem is the switch will be closed in hi or lo. I guess I'll fab a switch on the shifter instead.

make sure the shift tables can be set for the different low range ratio the 205 has over the newer cases .

I haven't played with this stuff . but have always wondered about it .

hence why I use 2wd 4l80-e to swap and the tcase is not important. but then my project is not done yet also . :doah:

Sounds like we are on the same path. My build is an 84 K5 dbw 6.0/2wd 4l80e/205. Just finished machining the adapter to fit the Trans and the case got the big bearing and total rebuild. I'm using the 2wd 4l80e speed signal for the ECM and the cable driven speedo to run the gauges.
