did the np 205 ever use automatic tranny fluid in them? i was under the impresion that all 205's used gear oil not tranny fluid. but when i pulled the slipyoke tailshaft off to do the fixed yoke swap it spit out automatic tranny fluid. oh and this is a th350 np205 combo

sorry i am very tired lol i asked myself to move it and without to much griping i moved it but i did give my self a very hard smack on the back of the head as a warning to not post in the wrong forum again :doah::doah:

Tech in the lounge!!!

You should ask a mod to move it :haha: :D

Yep, they switched to ATF like 30 said to help improve gas mileage.

I always figured that their reasoning was that if it helped mileage and the transfer case lasted just past the warranty period before it wore out, it was a win win.

But, despite the loading of the helical cut gears, which really like the heavier oil, I have not heard of them wearing out all that soon.
Either gear wear or galling or bearing wear.

Personally, I run Amsoil synthetic 75W-90. It cuts the friction generated heat down to where I can tell a big difference.

so should i just leave it as atf or change to gear oil? i will be pulling it out no matter what as the th350 is going to be rebuilt and im installing a twinstick on the 205. so stay atf or go to gear oil?

Pretty much dealer's choice I'd say. I like the synthetic 75W-90, and that is what I run in mine.
But both gear oil and ATF were put in from the factory depending on the year, and if yours has had ATF in it this long with no problem, you might as well stick with it.

If you are buying a twin stick kit from some company, you might ask what they recommend.
I'm sure that there was some gas saving with the ATF over the old gear oil, but I suspect that a lot of the difference is gone when you figure in synthetic.

if auto tranny run atf so 1 spair oil required on rig.

if stick and gear oil then gear oil for same reason .

or run what you feel comfy with .

and don't forget my 4l80-e/203/205 build in the tech section with pic by pic how to reman a 205 incase you need help . :thumb:

i like the idea of just one spare fluid lol and thanks for the info on the 205 i am going to go look at it now :)

Auto trans ..... ATF in the transfer case

Manual trans ....75-90 in the transfer case...

No chance of cross contamination in the event of seal failure in the adaptor.
