NP203? 1978 blazer problems and questions

i'll bet you a d60, that that's a 10 bolt. the cover is round.

look just right of the diff cover, there is a bolt there, which neither 10 bolt doesnt has.

I am going to go take a SUPER GOOD shot of it, just for you! :D

lol i concede defeat, my eyes were playing tricks on me. after closer inspection, i realized it was the housing that was making me think dana44, it has some extra metal that at first glance made me think it was a dana 44 just above the cover on the right side, but your right:bow:

ok went and test drove the truck, after adjusting the linkage I can more easily tell when I have moved to a different gear.

HOWEVER, the truck slips out of 2hi as soon as i let off the gas. Truck will stay in 4hi, hubs are unlocked. I hope im not damaging the thing. When its in 2hi and it slips out it just makes a spinning noise while in drive. It will do this same thing when in 4high, but it only happens occasionally and i haven't been able to test it out full this morning yet.

IS my np203 toast?

can you check to make sure the shifter is not hitting the body around the hole for the shifter. it may not be engaging entirely into gear.

on second thought, the shifter wouldn't be back to the body for 2hi. check for clearance anyway.

you said the inner rod has some free play in it. it may not be letting it engage fully.

my guess is that the np203 in this 78 is not the original because it does not have the holes to mount the support strut

my .02

the shifter needs to be all the way back in 4hi lock which is towards the seat/console you dont have 2hi. The reason for this is because you have unlocking hubs on a full time 4wd transfercase, there is not a 2 hi setting. If by chance the truck did have 2hi, it would also have 2 lo which would be the unlock settings on the case. Example from dash to console:

full time np 203 stock:
4 lo loc
4lo
n
4 hi
4 hi loc

part time converted np 203:

4lo
2lo
n
2hi
4hi

if you put the case in any of the positions next to neutral, and your hubs are unlocked, you will get a spinning sound in the t-case and that means the case is a full time unit, see if you lock the hubs and it still does this. hth.

sorry to revive this older thread now, but I did what you suggested, locked the hubs. Nothing changed, it will drive for about 50-100 feet and then make that spinning noise and stop driving. HOWEVER! previous owner did say that it needed a new front right hub, I probably sound dumb asking but could this cause it to still mess up and cause the spinning noise?

Add a washer under the detent spring as I suggested at the beginning of this thread...this increases the pressure on the detent keeping it in gear when you take your foot off the gas. It's a 5 minute fix.
