NP203 Slip?

Brocky said:
Yes the 203 can slip with no bad noises. I just went thru this with mine. A tranny shop here said in the tailend of a 203 it is almost like a rearend and it is baked. So I am switching to the 205. But a 203 is usually really cheap, I know I can get two for $100 canadian here right now.

I'm wondering what inside a 203 'slips'? There are no clutches that I am aware of, maybe the shift linkage needs adjusting? I am as perplexed as I would be if someone claimed their ring and pinion were slipping. School me.

Originally I had problems with the shifter. All the plates in the shifter box were dirty and rusted. This time they tell me that it is in the xfer case. I will ask him more about it tomarrow. But the diagram he showed me from the Haynes repair manaul looks like the rear end gears. Big gears and small gears in the same setup as a diff, but it is in the transfer case. I'll check into it tomarrow and post up what I find out. All I know right now, is if I take the rear end off the 203 I can reinstall another rear section and he claims it will work perfect. I dunno.

If it is those 'differential' gears, then doing the part time conversion should fix that, as those are what you replace with the kit. I'm still real curious as to why a 203 would slip, esp. only in third gear. Be sure to post up an update.

He wasnt around today to ask, but I will find out why it slips. But my 203 doesnt slip in 3rd. It slips all the time, mostly with the foot hard on the skinny padel. My front shaft still spins but the rear dont.

Mine is the one slipping in third. It also wont lock in LO position, which is incredibly frustrating when wheeling. So the plan is for the 205 swap, still pending on the donor truck, and if not, I will prob buy the P/T shaft kit and go from there. I just hope my chain isnt stretched, cause thats another $150 bucks. :(

I have had 3 203's, and one had a chain stretch. It would "pop" if you hit the gas hard. Other than that, I couldn't tell you how to tell a stretched chain from a good one.

Ya it doesnt do that, but from all the other problems i've had with this truck, im sure once I open it up to put it the part-time kit, it will start having all kinds of problems.

Sorry Bizee, and Brocky, I got confused. Bizee, did you try adjusting your shift linkage? The part time shaft kit is $$, the gear replacement type kit is cheaper, and probably what I would try before spending $200+ on a questionable t-case. But, if you do buy that shaft kit, and your 203 still gives you problems, I'll take that POS off your hands. Anyway, good luck, and be sure to post what you find out.

I just breezed through this thread again and you didn't mention checking/adjusting your t-case shift linkages, maybe you should try that. The factory manual and the Haynes manual have the instructions on how to do it.

Actually I just got the call from my buddy scott about a complete donor setup for a 205 swap. $250 bucks with driveshafts, shifter, adapter plate, t-case, and crossmember. I love having friends who own junkyards. :D

mofugly, I still didnt get to ask the Mechanic whats wrong with it. But I will when I get to see him. But if you weren't so far away and you want a 203 with something wrong you could have it. You still can but I'd say shipping would kill on that heavy sucker.

I am picking up the parts for my swap tonight. :bigthumb: I think i am getting 1-ton driveshafts too! Will post some pics of all the goods in the morning.

Good stuff. Now back to the slippage issue I was having. They say it is in the rear plantatarrim of the 203 or something. Dont know any more. My spelling is not right on it either. lol I might take it apart to look myself yet.

Ya, the rear output section of the transfer case has a differential in it, that differential becomes locked by sliding on the shaft by a fork. I think that is where my problem is too.

Oh, and went to get the t-case, and it was a 10-spline output from a manual, and not a 27 spline for a th350... super bummer.... :(
