I have it on a tranny jack, lined up perfectly. I can get it about a quarter inch on the splines, no more. I can turn the u-joint on the transfer case, and it turns the tranny output shaft, so I think it's on there. Tried leg pressing it in, won't budge. Any ideas?

Was it on the trans before? I only ask because there are different spline counts....

They can be tight sometimes though. A ratchet strap pulling it toward the trans can help while you jiggle it around

This is a different trans, however I got the t-case with a TH350 that it was attached to. My understanding is there are two different spline counts, 10 for manual and 27 for the automatic. So it should be the right shaft. I was able to thread the bottom two bolts in (longer bolts so they'd reach), and cranked on them. But it got harder and harder until the shaft wouldn't turn anymore. I took that to mean I shouldn't keep going, like there was too much pressure on it. I'm afraid if I tried the ratchet strap I'd have the same problem.

A friend recommended that I pull the tranny and put them together on the ground, then reinstall. Sounds like a lot more work, but I'm willing to try if that's the only answer.

I think the th400's have a 32 spline also.

If you can't get it on there in the truck, you'll have to do it on the ground...

yes 10 / 27/32 spline for stock gm use.

if it was a 32 spline t-case it would drop on and be sloppy .

something is not correct . best to remove the t-case and recheck all your stuff.

what tranny is it going on ? cause if the shaft length is to long you will bottom out and not be seated to the tranny . th350 203/205 t-cases are 27 spline but have about a 3/4 inch tail shaft stick out on the trans .

I'd pull it back off and make sure there is no rust or crud in the output shaft on the transmission and the input splines on the transfer case..

All it takes is a little grit or rust to jam things up..do not be tempted to "crank it in" by tightening the bolts, that will push the output shaft into the transmission and likely ruin something, maybe crack the case too..

SweetK30 is right too, make sure the output shaft is the right length one for your application..sometimes you'll run across a TH350 "short shaft" from a car that will only work on a 4x4 if you use a spacer between the tranny & t-case--without that spacer the shaft will stick out too far..

Thanks, I know it's a 4wd tranny as it came complete with the transfer case and adapter. I cranked on it a little bit, but backed off. How would I know if I pushed the output shaft into the tranny? Will there be play? I wiggled it after I took it apart and there's just the slightest bit of play if I pull and push it. Certainly no rust. I think I'm gonna just drop the tranny and put it all together on the ground.

Count the splines on each side, just for giggles

I think you need a spacer to run the 700R with the 205. How far is it sliding onto the coupler?

It does look like a th350 pan, for some reason I thought you had a 700.

Stickout should be under 1" if you measure it.
