Had the front shaft out of my truck , np205 sm465 combo and my son put it back in for me . I think he got side tracked and did not torque down the 4 bolts at the front flange . Long story short , within 2 weeks the bolts worked themselves out and backing out of a snowbank while plowing in 4hi , the front driveshaft let go under power at the transfer case . Had a bitch of a time shifting into 2 hi to get home and not really sure it actually was in 2wd . Thought the shift rail most to the passenger side looked a little tweaked , so tried to bend it a bit . Was able to get 4hi ,2hi , and neutral after that . Thought I was on the right track , so tried tweaking a little more . Then could only get 2hi and neutral . Took the linkage apart and nothing seems really bent up , tried to shift the rails by hand , no go . Tried prying on them with pry bar , hammering on them to move them in , went to the BFH and got 1 rail to move , outer most rail , other seems to be free moving . Now the shift rails look like I should be in 2hi , but when I put the shifter back on , it tells me I'm probably stuck between neutral and 4 low . Need advice ASAP ! Did I kill something inside or is it bound up between gears ? Tried turning front driveshaft by hand while trying to shift and that was no good either .

Sounds like the driveshaft may have hit the shift rail as it let go and trying to straighten it isn't helping anything, that bore in the case is fairly precise and a bend rail won't shift.

Also, don't forget, unless you took its balls out, you cannot shift one rail unless the other is in certain positions.

So, if you forced it to shift into low range rear without the front being in low, you probably messed something up in the lockouts .

The good news is, its fairly simple to rebuild, the parts are available and not too pricey.

The bad news is, its probably going to need to something like that, and it will frigging well kill you if you drop it on your head taking it out.
So, get help or a transmission jack it can be strapped to.

Strength and quality are heavy.

removing the balls dosnt make it shift like that.

its the 2 rods on the inside of the case that keep it from cross shifting.

and full step by step reman of a 205 here. but paying members can only see the pics sorry for that.
You're probably right. I've never run a 205 except stock, but I have seen where you can modify one to let you put it in 2L.
For some reason, I thought it was the balls in the detents of the shifter rods that controlled that.

You prob did bend a rail. But try loosening the poppet plugs a turn or two. Maybe you popped it past a detent. or maybe you broke one of the rail conector bars, don.t know if either are possible. I used to lose my drivline bolts like crazy, with grade 8, nylock nuts and lock tight, vibration is a bitch.

After I lost a few bolts on mine, I started tightening them every month and I had lock washers on them.
I don't think your son was being lazy.

wont work that way.

the plug just holds the spring and ball centered. if cracked loose there is nothing to hold the plug from spinning loose.

I didn.t mean leave it that way. It just makes it easier to move the shift rails when working on it. Keep us updated on what the problem was. Might be time for some new modified shift rails:D

Ok , I need to get this truck up and going . np 205's seem to be alot more rare up here in Canada than where you guys are . The right one for behind my sm 465 is even more of an odity . I am getting so many conflicting reports on when they went from the 10 spline to the 32 spline that I don't even know what to ask for when phoning around . It is a 1980 K5 sbc 350 with sm465 and np 205 . Which np 205 do I have ? I'm stuck in 2 hi and need the truck to drive daily and to pick up the transfer case I decide to get . Nearest thing I've found so far is 3 hours away for a 32 spline and 4 hours away for the 10 spline . It would be a PITA to have to remove the T case just to count splines then put it back in to go get my new case . Someone tell me what I have please !

fig 8 style adaptor is 10 spline for 465 use.

fig 8 style adaptor is 32 spline for use in th400 auto.

the round 6 adaptor is long 32 spline for late 465 and th400 auto.

the front output can be 10 spline or 30 spline and possible diffrent yoke. if you had 1/2 yoke and 4 tiny bolts its a 10 spline shaft style. these can be swaped around easy.

if you find a tcase thats from a th350 you can swap the input gear from your old one real easy to do . and if you need to swap the front output shaft its easy also.

but if you have a bent shift rail thats a easy cheep fix . pull the tcase put on bench. get a new / used shift rail from a vendor here or wanted ad in classifyeds and swap it your self its easy.

if you want the step by step with tons of pics grab a membership and read up that link i posted.
