google searched and searched here and couldnt find a direct answer.

Can you shift into 4 High while the vehicle is in motion, say 35mph, with an np205 case?
the roads here are iffy in the winter, sometimes you need 4wd for a stretch then you wont.

I was thinking you could not shift on the fly with this t-case but some say you can.

You can switch from. 2 hi to 4 hi.

I didn't think it would work but I would regularly shift my 86 in and out after the first time I tried always just clicked in no problems.

I never did it faster than about 40 thougj

As long as the hubs are already locked...sure. I used to with my old 205.

Fwiw, there was a synchronized version in the early to mid 80's trucks with auto locking hubs. This version will allow shifting at higher speeds.

The synchro version is identified by an oiling vein on the lower rear cover.

Yep. The earlier non-synchro cases won't be very tolerant of shift on the fly.

Yeah, my old 10 spline '77 205 had no issues shifting on the fly.

the synchro 205s were made to use with the auto hubs. you do not need synchro with manual hubs (or slugs) to shift into 4H from 2H on the fly, if your hubs are locked. going into 4L means stopping, synchro or no.

Depends upon the condition of the case. The NP205 in my 1975 K5 (out of a 1980 K5) I can shift on the fly pretty easily. I have also had NP205's that I could hardly shift at a complete stop.

This is an interesting topic. I’ve had many 205’s in my life between a ’72 K5, the ’78 K20 wrecker of my dad’s we owned since new, and at least 4 different 205’s in my blue K10 alone (27 spline to TH350, 10 spline to SM465, a different 27 spline to NV4500 and lastly a 32 spline round to NV4500) as well as several in friends trucks. All of them would allow shifting into 4hi will rolling. Not only rolling but, rolling pretty fast too like 40-50 MPH (never tried any higher than that).

This latest 205 in the K10 is a late round pattern 205 with the ORD shift rails with the ORD twin stick. This round pattern 205 is the only 205 I’ve ever had that won’t shift into 4hi while rolling. The odd thing is with the twin stick it will shift from low to hi range while slightly rolling but I cannot engage the front axle into hi range while rolling. The last 205 I had also was on the ORD twin stick and shifted into hi range while rolling just fine. I’m not sure if it is this particular tcase itself or the ORD shift rods (which is a new addition when I installed this round 205), my installation of the shift rods, something with the twin stick or what the hell. Drives me crazy. I miss being able to pull engage the front axle into hi range while in motion. Crazy that I can shift from high to low range or visa versa on a slow roll but not engage the front axle on the fly without gear clash that absolutely won’t let you in until the truck is stopped. Anybody else experience that with the ORD shift rails or twin stick?

My NP205 behind my NP203 in my doubler in my 1990 K5 is triple sticked. It shifts like pure ****. On it's better days.

I have a round pattern 205 twin sticked and can engage the front (or rear if I was in front wheel drive) at any speed in high or low range with the hubs locked. I do this often every winter as I plow snow with the truck.
