NP205 Swap

its one you can use .

front flange easy to score used no problems .

rear fixed yoke easy to score used for under 80 bucks on ebay or here . DONT NEED $$$ kit.

and I think chris @ ord said it you can use this style and just swap in the later/newer long input gear to use behind your tranny with tail shaft that's in tranny .

EDIT : need better pic of rear cover for front output. looks like its got a syncro bump on it .

if so nock atleast $100-$150 off his price as you will prob wana convert to non syncro front guts .

Can you explain about the synchro vs. non-synchro thing? I'm not aware of this.

early - mid 80's some 205 were syncro on the front output to aid in shift on the fly in/out of 2hi to 4 hi . didn't realy take off good.

no major stock basic use disadvantage but if you ever wana swap up to a 32 spline front output over the 30 spline its a extra case for all the front guts to make it a reg 205 inside .

still even at 350 its not a bad deal . adaptor is 200-250 used all the time . case already set up for large input bearing . 75-100 bucks savings of machine work .

also short 32 spline input resale easy to guy doing doubler kits and need it . ( possible swap to someone doing round 6 long input swap for doubler )

but as I said if you can drop him down 100-150 of his original price cause it looks like its a syncro cover on the back . it will save you coin in the end .

I think you nailed it:

yep its got the bump of a syncro .

see if he come down on price . 200 or less you wont get burnt . but if you wana wait there might be better out there you haven't found yet.

Yeah, it's a 2 hour drive from me anyway. I'll keep waiting.

By the way, I just had a sinking feeling thinking about this... we're going on the assumption that I have a 32 spline output on the 400. I had the 400 swapped in in place of the 700 about 20 years ago, and I'm not really sure how they did it. They kept the original 208 transfer case, which would have started with a 27 spline input. I think they had an option of either changing the 208 to 32 spline input, or changing the 400 to 27 spline output (using stuff from Advance Adapters). Any thoughts on which way they were likely to have gone? Is there any possible way to know without removing the transfer case and counting?

There are a lot of parts that are different in the syncro 205. Lots of pictures showing the differences in here from post # 73 - 81. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/chevy/653713-some-np205-user-info-chevy-3.html

To get all of the good parts.---32 spline fixed yoke rear, 32 spline long input, and 32 spline front output.----It will take parts from at least 2 transfer cases. Ford 205's have fixed rear yokes and 32 spline and can be found cheap to rob these parts from.

The more I think about this, the more I bet I have a 27 spline adapted TH400 (see two posts prior). If I do have 27 spline output that fits 208, does that actually open up 205 options, or does it kill all my options? Was it TH350 apps that had 27 spline?

th350 was 27 spline .

but not sure on any special needs for the coupler length for the th350 style and a special th400 27 spline shaft.

Keep in mind that changing the output in the trans requires tearing the entire transmission apart

I think I already have the 27 spline adapter in the trans, so I'm looking at what I can do with that starting point. Looks like maybe I need the plate in that kit and then I could mate to a 27 spline figure 8 NP205.

Old thread, but I thought I'd give an update. I pulled the t-case today and I do indeed have a 27 spline 208 mated to the TH400. The 400 must have been modified to have a 27 spline output. A 205 is not in my future any time soon I guess.

Sounds like an Advance Adapters kit. I have one new, never used sitting the garage.

Find a np241c and throw a SYE on it...problem solved. Half the weight and a better crawling gear. upgrade the chain if your really worried. You don't have a twin stick now so you wont miss it :thumb: My buddie runs a 241 behind his NV4500/ vortec 350 in his 85 fj80 landcruiser. It aint a light truck by any means and he does fine.

I'm going with a 208SYE now anyway (you posted on my other thread), but I would have preferred that the t-case had been changed to 32 instead of the transmission going to 27. That would have given me more options down the road. And if I ever break that TH400 output shaft away from home I don't know what anyone could do for me.

Wow. This thread has become a cluster**** with all the ideas and suggestions.

I see your 400 tranny is one that will require the '85-'91 years of 205 t-cases in order to bolt it right up without any modifications.

The crew cabs weren't the only trucks with the fixed yoke outputs. You could find them under the cab-and-chassis trucks, too. These trucks had a 135.5" wheelbase.

I'd keep plugging away to find a 205 from any '85-'91 K/V30/3500.

With the 27 spline output on the 400, I think I'm out of luck for anything even close to bolt-on.

You mean a fixed output NP-205 like one from a '72 K5 that was behind a
TH-350 (which has 27 splines),wont work?...because the TH400 has a different 6 bolt "tail housing" vs the 4 bolt TH-350 one?..
