So my np208 on my k5 is going. It keeps bumping out of 4hi, tried adjusting the shift linkage but its still very easy to knock it out. When the forks go, is it sudden or gradual, because this was a sudden change. In the event of me needed a new case, should i go for a swap or rebuild? Should i buy a used case or rebuilt one, or rebuild my own? Ive never done any major truck/engine work but im pretty mechanically adept. Either way i would like to do the work myself. Swap or rebuild. Hell i might even swap in a rebuild case and rebuild my old one anyway.

Also, i was at the yard today looking for 14bff with 4.10s. The guy said he had one from mid to late 90s burb. I know that any 14b from 73 to 87 are direct bolt in and from the 91 burb. he said the one he had from the latter model burb was direct bolt in too. so i guess he dosnt know what hes talking about. I just need any option i get for a bolt in, there dosnt seem to be alot of old chevy trucks around and gm14b are hard to come by. Should i go for it or no.?

Well i say get a rebuilt 208 then rebuild your old one for a spare it never hurts to learn something new right? That is what i am going to do with my 86 K5. My 208 was going out when i got the K5 i have the same problem as you. It will not stay in 4hi and it grinds when you put it in N or 4lo.

Hell i might even swap in a rebuild case and rebuild my old one anyway.

This is the best bet IMO if you use the truck regularly. I would do the above. This way you can rebuild your old one or use it for a parts case if you have problems with the one you stick in.

I have had to make one good 208 out of 2 bad ones before. It actually worked very well for me to have a parts case or two laying around. I beat the crap out of my 208 and it has lasted well considering most people think the 208 is a POS that can't take hard offroad use.

You are not going to find a lower lowrange for cheap. You can swap in a 241 which is .11 lower then a 208 but other then that you have to sell out some good money and will have driveshaft costs to deal with too.

thanks. Chevy fullsize parts are hard to find around here. Im not sure why. All you see in yards is fords and s series trucks. Maybe a burb or two but blazers and k series are hard to find. I may just have to rebuild for now. In either case can someone suggest a rebuild kit? What comes with it? Every single peice of the t case or only some parts? How long should i tcase last with mild abuse? Also, could this be a low fluids problem? I havnt checked it in awhile but she hasnt had any leaks, no grinding, and is a sudden problem.

Have you checked all of your mounts? A buddy was having teh same problem in a ford with a 208. He replaced the tranny mount and solved the problem.

i am gonna rebuild one and sye it at the same time, i already have the case in the garage and one in my truck but the one in my truck is going out anyways.
then ill replace the one in my truck and do the same thing to the other one as a spare.

im getting my rebuild kit off rockauto.com and then a small parts kit of ebay.
then i will get a tom woods driveshaft for it and call it done.

an upgrade for a 208 are to get a 241 chain instead. not the HD one.

never checked, what should i look for?

I'm not sure what the best way to check it is. I know the problem is too much movement from the mounts. Just dont know how to test the movement.

get under it and lay on your back. put your feet under the TC somewhere and push up, if its excessive youll see it. check motor mounts as well, i bet theyre sagged a bit.

hmmm, is the offroaddesign rebuild kit include everything i need? Or do i need a seperate kit for more of the parts? I could reuse my chain unless there more than 1/2 inch of movement correct, and im guessing the chain dosnt come with the kit so ill just have to grab one out of a 208 or 241. Any advantage to a 241 swap? Chain swap, the chain stronger or what? Thanks

a 241 is much better in the oiling and a better ratio, the chain itself is marginally stronger then the 208.

thats a normal yard price for around here, 600 for a complete rebuilt 241 or 400? and the 1989 241 is a direct swap to your truck, later doesnt have the mechanical speedometer. if you get a different one somebody can sell you the mechanical tailhousing. while youre at it get it SYEed
