Hi all,

The seal from my transfer case to the front drive shaft needs replacing, so I ordered the Timken 3173 (89 blazer, NP241C transfer case). https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tmk-3173

Problem is it isn’t very tight. It fits, just very loose. I believe I ordered the correct part, and it is blue as was the one I pulled out (Threw the old one away so I can’t take a micrometer to it).

I assume that front transfer case seal should be as tight as all the other seals? Maybe with a bead of RTV it could work?

Any info is much appreciated.

Ah jeeez, summit lists NP241 not NP241C as the appropriate application. This could be my issue?

Could be. I always cross the GM part number before buying on stuff like that.

Having said that, I bought a too small 14sf axle seal, and instead of digging into why it didnt fit (as there was never a change) I used it, and rtv to hold it in place. Cost me a brake job when it finally failed. Probably got 10-20k before it failed.

Unless you like to look at the t-case all the time, and worry, I'd suggest finding what is wrong now. Those things only hold 1.5qts IIRC, a slow leak would take forever to drain it, but if it suddenly got much worse, you'd only know when it blew up, if you were in the middle of a long drive.

Thanks for the replies.

@franklin5, thanks much for the part number. $28 later and I have my third seal inbound. If it fits it’ll be worth it.

Today I went to the local store which is very good (not a Napa \ oreillys \ autozone). Came home with a national 710928 seal. It was double lipped vs the single lipped Timken, and it still did not fit. All my googling says it should. Oh well. Very frustrating, but if the official GM one fits, all will be good.
